Your dash is counting down — what that means right now

The countdown is the ECU reducing your remaining restarts or miles. The starting distance varies by manufacturer, and it drops every mile you drive.

Ford Transit and Transit Custom allow you to finish the current journey but will not restart once the ignition is turned off at zero. Mercedes Sprinter and Vito display "Only X restarts possible" and then lock the engine. VAG vehicles may limit speed to 50 mph before eventually preventing restarts.

The critical point: on many vehicles, once you switch off the engine after zero, it will not restart until the fault is resolved. If your countdown is low — below 500 miles or single-digit restarts — park the vehicle safely where it can be worked on. Do not risk switching off in a car park or narrow street with difficult access. Call us and we come to where the vehicle is.

What triggered the countdown

The countdown starts because the ECU has logged a fault code against the SCR system. These faults bring most urgent callouts.

  • Blocked dosing injector — P20EE, P204F

Urea crystals block the injector nozzle and dosing drops below threshold. The ECU logs P20EE (SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold) or P204F (reductant system performance). It is common on Ford Transit and Transit Custom. We clean or replace the injector on-site.

  • Failed pump — P20E8

The pump cannot build enough pressure. P20E8 (reductant pressure too low) starts the countdown. On PSA vans — Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay, Fiat Ducato — the pump is inside the tank unit, so failure means the whole module is replaced. On Transit Custom the chassis-rail pump corrodes from road salt.

  • NOx sensor failure — P2200, P2201, P229F

A failed upstream or downstream NOx sensor sends incorrect data to the ECU. P2200 and P2201 are direct circuit codes; P229F (NOx sensor correlation) means the two sensors disagree beyond tolerance. Mercedes Sprinter is well known for downstream NOx sensor failures triggering urgent countdowns.

  • Tank heater failure — P20BA, P20B9

The heater prevents AdBlue freezing at −11 °C. A failed element sets P20BA (reductant heater performance) or P20B9 (reductant heater control circuit). On Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Relay and Ducato the heater is integrated into the tank — whole unit replaced. Faults often show up in cold weather.

  • Contaminated or degraded fluid — P207F

Water contamination, fuel spillage into the tank, or old degraded fluid trips the quality sensor and logs P207F (reductant quality performance). We drain, flush and refill with ISO 22241 certified fluid.

Fast triage — what we check first on an urgent callout

When you need the vehicle moving today, we prioritise speed without skipping diagnosis. We run a focused triage to identify the failed component quickly.

  • Fault codes and freeze-frame data

We read every stored and pending code plus the freeze-frame snapshot captured at the moment of failure — engine speed, coolant temperature, exhaust temperature, dosing status. This narrows the diagnosis immediately before we touch a single component.

  • Dosing pressure live test

We command the pump on and monitor live rail pressure. We compare it against the manufacturer specification. Low or fluctuating pressure points to pump, pressure sensor or blocked line. It rules the whole pressure side in or out.

  • NOx sensor live readings

We read both sensors in parts per million while the engine is running. A healthy sensor responds to throttle changes within seconds. A stuck or lazy reading identifies the failed sensor. On Sprinters we also check the SCR efficiency percentage PID.

  • Heater current draw

We measure resistance at the connector and watch current draw when commanded on. Open circuit or low draw confirms heater failure.

  • Fluid quality and level

We compare the quality sensor reading against a refractometer measurement of the actual fluid. A mismatch indicates contamination or sensor failure. The level sensor is checked for stuck readings — P203F (reductant level sensor performance) triggers when the float sticks at a false low.

  • Crystals and wiring

We inspect the injector bung for crystal build-up and check wiring connectors underneath for corrosion and backed-out pins. On Transit, Sprinter and Crafter, road-salt corrosion on the AdBlue loom is a hidden cause of intermittent faults.

What the fix gets you

The outcome is a vehicle that starts, drives and has no AdBlue warning on the dash. Countdown cleared, fault resolved at root cause, SCR system verified working through live data. Fixed price before we start. No fix, no fee. Written warranty.

Many urgent callouts are resolved in a single visit. If a specific part needs ordering, we diagnose on the first visit, confirm the fixed price, order the part and return to fit.

  • Countdown cleared, vehicle restarting

Once the root fault is repaired, we clear all codes and verify the countdown has reset. We start the engine and confirm a clean dash. On vehicles that reached zero restarts, the ECU releases the engine lock once the fault is resolved and codes are cleared.

  • SCR system verified with live data

We do not just clear codes and leave. We run the engine and monitor dosing pressure, both NOx sensors and heater status to confirm everything operates within specification. If any value drifts during the test, we investigate before handing the vehicle back.

  • Written warranty

Every repair comes with a written warranty. You keep a copy of the warranty and can call us if the fault returns within the covered period.

  • Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Covers callout, diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid drain and refill, or wiring repair. Fixed price quoted before we travel.
  • NOx sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Sensor cost varies by make and position. We quote once diagnosis confirms which sensor has failed.
  • Pump module or tank unit: Fixed price after diagnosis Tank-integrated units on Boxer, Relay, Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter cost more than standalone pumps. Quoted before parts are ordered.
  • Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Where more than one part has failed, we quote the full scope before proceeding.

Software path — considered only after diagnosis

Diagnosis and physical repair come first. Software modification of the SCR system is discussed only when a component has failed and replacement cost is disproportionate, or when the owner requests it after a full explanation.

A software modification reads the original ECU calibration, adjusts the SCR strategy, and writes the file back. Countdown removed, dash warning cleared.

We explain the legal and practical position before any software work. Modifying the emissions system is a separate matter from the MOT test, and the regulatory position may change. Repair is always offered first.

Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.

What to do right now before we arrive

If the countdown is still running but low — below 500 miles or single-digit restarts — drive to a safe location where the vehicle can be worked on. Your driveway, a yard, or a well-lit car park with level ground and space around the vehicle. Avoid narrow streets or multi-storey car parks.

If the countdown is near zero, do not switch the engine off until you are parked somewhere suitable. On many vehicles, once the engine is switched off after zero it will not restart. A running vehicle gives us more diagnostic options than one that is locked out.

If the vehicle has already stopped and will not restart, leave it where it is and call us. Do not tow it — we come to the vehicle. Do not top up AdBlue unless the message specifically says the tank is empty; topping up does not clear fault codes and can complicate diagnosis if contamination is involved.

Have your registration ready when you call. If you can see codes (P20EE, P20E8, P207F or similar) tell us. Call 0203 038 8555 — we answer 6am to 9pm, 7 days including bank holidays.

Early and late callouts — how they work

A courier spots the countdown on the evening run and needs the van for a morning collection. A Transit drops to zero restarts on a Friday evening. These are routine jobs for us.

Call 0203 038 8555 between 6am and 9pm. Give us the registration, postcode, dash message and countdown mileage. We give you a fixed price for the diagnosis and likely fix before we set off.

We arrive with full diagnostic equipment and a laptop for ECU work. The vehicle is tested, the countdown cleared, and you drive away or start your shift in the morning.

If a part is needed, we diagnose on the first visit, order it and return to fit at the agreed price.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix my AdBlue fault today?

Yes. We work 6am to 9pm, 7 days a week including bank holidays. Priority callouts for countdowns and no-starts are routine. Call 0203 038 8555 with your registration, postcode and dash message. We quote on the phone and travel to the vehicle.

My van says zero restarts remaining — will it start again?

Once the countdown reaches zero and you switch the engine off, most vehicles will not restart until the fault is resolved. If the engine is still running, do not turn it off until you are parked somewhere safe and accessible. Call us immediately. We attend no-start vehicles and resolve the fault on-site so the ECU releases the lock.

How much does an emergency AdBlue fix cost?

Diagnosis and fix starts from £249. The total depends on which component has failed. We quote a fixed price on the phone before we travel, and you only pay if we fix the agreed fault. No fix, no fee.

What does P20EE mean on a Ford Transit?

P20EE means SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold. On a Transit or Transit Custom, a common cause is a crystallised dosing injector — urea deposits block the nozzle and reduce dosing below the efficiency threshold. We clean or replace the injector on-site. Other causes include a failed NOx sensor or contaminated fluid.

Should I top up AdBlue if the warning light is on?

Only if the message specifically says the level is low and the tank is genuinely near empty. Most AdBlue warnings are fault-based, not level-based. Topping up does not clear a fault code and can complicate diagnosis if contamination is the cause. If in doubt, call 0203 038 8555 before adding fluid.

Can I drive with an AdBlue countdown showing?

You can drive while it is counting down, but each mile reduces your remaining distance. At zero, most vehicles block restarts after you switch off. If below 500 miles, park somewhere the vehicle can be worked on and call us. Do not risk switching off where a no-start would cause problems.

What if you cannot fix the fault on the first visit?

If a specific part needs ordering, we complete full diagnosis on the first visit, identify the exact component, order the part and return to fit. If we cannot fix the agreed fault, you do not pay — that is our no fix, no fee guarantee.
