AdBlue Pump and Supply Module
AdBlue Pump Failure: Pressure Testing and Module Replacement
The AdBlue pump builds pressure to push fluid through the dosing lines and injector. When it fails, rail pressure drops, dosing stops and the ECU starts a countdown. P20E8 is the most common code. On PSA and Fiat vans the pump is inside the tank unit. On some Transit Custom models it sits on the chassis rail. We diagnose with live pressure data and quote a fixed price from £249. No fix, no fee.

What a pump failure looks like on the dash
The pump is the pressure source for the entire AdBlue delivery circuit. When output drops below the ECU target the system cannot dose correctly. The ECU stores P20E8 (reductant pressure too low) and begins the countdown sequence.
On Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato the pump, filter, heater and level sensor are all integrated into a single tank unit. A pump failure on these vans means the whole module is replaced. On Sprinter and Crafter the pump module also sits inside the tank. On some Ford Transit Custom models the pump is a separate chassis-rail unit — easier to access but exposed to road salt corrosion.
What causes AdBlue pump failure
Diaphragm or motor wear
The pump uses a small electric motor driving a diaphragm or piston to build pressure. After high mileage the motor brushes wear or the diaphragm perforates. Output pressure drops gradually until the ECU threshold is breached and P20E8 is logged.
Blocked internal filter element
A fine mesh filter sits at the pump inlet to catch debris and crystal particles. Over time this element clogs, starving the pump. Pressure falls even though the motor is running at full speed. On tank-integrated units the filter is not serviceable separately.
Crystallisation inside the pump head
Urea residue can crystallise inside the pump valves and passages. Partial blockage causes erratic pressure. Full blockage stops flow entirely. Vehicles parked for extended periods without running an AdBlue purge cycle are particularly susceptible.
Wiring or relay failure
The pump draws several amps under load. A corroded connector, chafed loom or faulty relay reduces voltage to the motor. The pump runs slowly or intermittently, producing low pressure without a mechanical fault inside the unit.
Contaminated fluid damage
Water, fuel or incorrect concentration in the tank attacks the pump seals and check valves. Contamination is a frequent cause of premature pump failure on vehicles where the filler cap has been left loose or the wrong fluid was added.
Corrosion on chassis-mounted units
On Transit Custom models where the pump sits on the chassis rail, road salt and spray attack the housing and pipe fittings. External corrosion can cause leaks at the pressure outlet or seize the mounting bolts, making removal difficult.
How we diagnose a pump fault on your driveway
Fault codes and pressure freeze-frame
All stored and pending codes are read. The freeze-frame snapshot captured at P20E8 shows the actual rail pressure versus the ECU target at the moment of failure. A large gap confirms a pressure-side fault.
Live rail pressure under command
We command the pump on via the diagnostic tool and graph actual rail pressure in real time. We compare the reading against the manufacturer specification for the vehicle. A pump that cannot reach or hold target pressure is confirmed faulty.
Pump current draw measurement
We measure the electrical current the pump motor draws under load. High current with low pressure suggests a mechanical seizure or blockage. Low current suggests a wiring fault, relay issue or failed motor winding.
Supply line and filter inspection
On vehicles where the filter is accessible we check for blockage. The supply lines are inspected for kinks, crystal deposits and leaks at every connection point between the tank and the pump inlet.
Injector flow cross-check
We verify that the injector is not stuck open, which would cause pressure to drop under dosing command. This distinguishes a pump fault from an injector leak that mimics low pump output.
Fluid quality confirmation
A refractometer test confirms 32.5% urea concentration. If the fluid is contaminated we drain and flush before fitting a new pump to prevent immediate repeat failure.
Repair: pump service, module or chassis unit
The repair depends on the vehicle platform and the nature of the failure. On tank-integrated systems the module is replaced as a unit. On chassis-rail pumps the standalone unit is swapped. We carry common modules for same-day repair where stock allows. Fixed price before we start. No fix, no fee. Written warranty.
Tank-integrated module replacement
On Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay, Fiat Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter the pump is part of the tank sender unit. The entire module is lifted from the tank and replaced. The tank is inspected for contamination and flushed if necessary before the new unit is fitted.
Chassis-rail pump swap
On Transit Custom models with a separate pump unit, the old pump is unbolted from the chassis rail and the replacement is fitted. Corroded pipe fittings are replaced at the same time to prevent leaks.
Post-repair pressure and dosing verification
After replacement the engine is started and live rail pressure is monitored under dosing load. We confirm the downstream NOx reading drops as dosing recovers. All codes are cleared and the countdown is reset.

Software path — considered only after diagnosis
Diagnosis and physical repair come first. Software modification of the SCR pressure strategy is discussed only when the pump module has failed and replacement cost is disproportionate, or when the owner requests it after a full explanation.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Tank-integrated vs chassis-rail — why it matters for cost
On PSA, Fiat, Sprinter and Crafter platforms the pump sits inside the AdBlue tank as part of a combined sender unit that also contains the heater, level sensor and filter. Replacing just the pump is not an option — the whole module comes out as one piece. Parts cost is higher, and the labour involves draining and partially lowering the tank.
On some Transit Custom models the pump is a separate unit bolted to the chassis rail with external pipe connections. It is cheaper and quicker to replace. However, the chassis-mounted position exposes it to road salt and stone damage that tank-mounted units avoid.
Preventing premature pump failure
Contaminated fluid is the most preventable cause of pump failure. Always use ISO 22241 certified AdBlue from a sealed container. Keep the filler cap tight and clean the area around it before opening. Fuel or water contamination can destroy pump seals within a few hundred miles.
Vehicles parked for long periods should ideally have a purge cycle run before shutdown. Many ECUs command a reverse purge that draws fluid back from the lines after the engine is switched off. Interrupting the ignition cycle before the purge completes leaves fluid in the lines where it crystallises.
Frequently asked questions
What does P20E8 mean on my van?
P20E8 is a reductant pressure code. It sets when the AdBlue rail pressure is below the ECU target. The cause is usually pump failure, but a blocked filter, kinked line or stuck injector can also drop pressure. We test live rail pressure on-site to isolate the fault.
Is the AdBlue pump inside the tank on my Sprinter?
On most Sprinter models the pump is integrated into the tank sender unit along with the heater and level sensor. Replacing the pump means replacing the whole module. We carry common Sprinter tank units for same-day repair where stock allows.
Can an AdBlue pump be repaired or does it need replacing?
In most cases the pump module is replaced as a sealed unit. Internal diaphragm or motor repair is not practical on-site. On chassis-rail models the standalone pump is swapped. We diagnose first — sometimes the fault is wiring or a relay, not the pump itself.
Why did my AdBlue pump fail after only two years?
Contaminated fluid is the most common cause of early pump failure. Water, fuel spillage into the tank or old degraded fluid damages pump seals and check valves. A refractometer test during diagnosis will confirm whether contamination was a factor.
How long does an AdBlue pump replacement take?
A chassis-rail pump on Transit Custom is typically completed in a single visit. A tank-integrated module on Boxer, Relay, Ducato, Sprinter or Crafter takes longer because the tank must be partially lowered. Most jobs are completed same day.
Will the countdown reset after the pump is replaced?
Yes. Once the new pump is fitted and verified with live pressure data, we clear all fault codes. The ECU releases the countdown and the dash returns to normal. We start the engine and confirm a clean dash before handing the vehicle back.
