Three stages, one fault
The wording changes by make, but every AdBlue fault moves through the same three stages.
Stage 1: Warning
The system has logged a fault but no countdown has started yet. This is the cheapest point to diagnose it, before the vehicle limits restarts.
Stage 2: Countdown
The engine control unit has started counting down. When it reaches zero the engine will not restart after it is switched off. Clearing codes does not stop it while the fault is still there.
Stage 3: No start
The countdown has run out. The engine will not start until the fault is repaired and the system is reset. We come to the vehicle, so it does not need towing.
Real dashboard photos
Ford Transit: “AdBlue® sys malfunction. Service req'd”. The engine warning light and AdBlue light are both on. Ford shows this before any countdown starts. Ford Transit AdBlue repairFord Transit: “AdBlue® sys malfunction. Service required”. The same Ford message on another Transit. It shows before the countdown, so this is the time to book. Ford Transit AdBlue repairMercedes-Benz: “Check AdBlue. See Owner's Manual”. A spanner symbol with no mileage yet. Mercedes often follows this with an “Eng. start not possible in” countdown. Mercedes AdBlue repairRenault Master: “Check Anti-Pollution System”. Renault's wording for an emissions fault, shown with the engine light and service spanner. The AdBlue system is one of the systems it covers.Audi: “AdBlue: system fault. No restart in 15 miles! See owner's manual”. Only 15 miles left. The engine will run until it is switched off, then it will not restart. Keep the engine running or park where we can reach it. VW, Audi, Skoda AdBlue repairAudi (virtual cockpit): “AdBlue/DEF: fault. No restart in 650 mi. See owner's manual”. A long countdown. The number goes down with every mile driven, so booking early gives the most time. VW, Audi, Skoda AdBlue repairRange Rover Evoque: “No engine restarts in 55 miles. Diesel Exhaust Fluid dosing malfunction”. Diesel Exhaust Fluid is another name for AdBlue. “Dosing” means the system is not injecting fluid as expected. AdBlue injector faultsMercedes-Benz: “Eng. start not possible in 477 mi”. The AdBlue symbol and engine light are shown together. This is the Mercedes countdown message. Mercedes AdBlue repairPeugeot 5008: “AdBlue Emissions fault: Starting impossible in 300 mi”. Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall share this wording. It points to a fault, not low fluid.Peugeot (i-Cockpit): “Top up AdBlue: Starting impossible in 750 mi”. The dash asks for a top up. If the tank is already full, or the message comes back after filling, the fault is elsewhere in the system. AdBlue quality sensorCitroën: “UREA Emissions control fault: Starting prevented in 600 mi”. Urea is the active ingredient in AdBlue. Older Citroën displays use the word UREA instead of AdBlue.Citroën Berlingo: “Emissions fault: Starting impossible in 50 mi”. Shown on the touchscreen. At 50 miles, treat it as urgent and avoid switching off far from home.Vauxhall Combo: “Emissions fault: Starting impossible in 50 mi”. The same message as the Berlingo, shown on the radio display. The Combo and Berlingo share many parts.Vauxhall Combo Van: “Emissions fault: Starting impossible in 550 mi”. The AdBlue symbol with a service spanner. The same countdown logic as Peugeot and Citroën.Peugeot Partner: “AdBlue. Additive consumption fault: Starting impossible”. No mileage left. The system has flagged that AdBlue use does not match what it expects. AdBlue no startVolkswagen Crafter: “Error: AdBlue (DEF). Engine start disabled.”. The countdown has run out. The engine will not start until the fault is repaired and reset. VW Crafter AdBlue repair
Dash warning questions
Why does my dash say “Emissions fault: Starting impossible”?
Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall use this message when the AdBlue (SCR) system has a fault it cannot clear. The number after it is how many miles are left before the engine will not restart. It needs a diagnosis, not just a top up.
Is “Diesel Exhaust Fluid” the same as AdBlue?
Yes. Diesel Exhaust Fluid, DEF and urea are all names for the same fluid. Land Rover, Audi and VW often use DEF on the dash, and older Citroën displays say UREA.
I topped up the AdBlue but the warning is still there. Why?
If the tank is full and the message stays, or comes back, the fault is in the system itself. Common causes are the pump, the heater, the quality sensor, the injector or a NOx sensor. Live data is needed to find which one.
Can I keep driving with an AdBlue countdown?
The engine runs until the countdown reaches zero. After that it will not restart once switched off. Book a repair while there are miles left, and if the number is low, avoid switching off far from where you need to be.
