VW Crafter AdBlue Repair
VW Crafter AdBlue repair: tank unit, NOx sensor and countdown faults resolved mobile
The VW Crafter 2.0 TDI uses the EA288-family SCR system with an integrated tank unit containing the pump, heater and level sensor. When a component inside the unit fails, the dash warns "No engine start possible in X miles" and begins counting down. NOx sensor faults and injector crystallisation are also common. We diagnose and repair on site, 6am–9pm, 7 days a week including bank holidays. From £249, fixed price before work starts, no fix no fee.

What "No engine start possible" means on a Crafter
The VW Crafter displays "No engine start possible in X miles" when the ECU detects an SCR fault. The counter reduces with every mile driven. Some Crafter models show a secondary warning — speed limited to 50 mph — before the start lockout activates.
At zero miles the ECU prevents the engine from cranking on the next ignition-off event. If the engine is still running when the counter hits zero, do not switch it off until you are parked somewhere accessible. The Crafter's warning is among the more aggressive systems — it reaches lockout relatively quickly compared to some manufacturers.
Common AdBlue faults on the VW Crafter
The Crafter 2.0 TDI from the EA288 family uses a tank-integrated design where the pump, heater and level sensor are combined in a single unit. This design affects both the failure modes and the repair approach.
Tank unit pump failure — P20E8
The pump inside the integrated tank unit loses pressure over time. P20E8 (reductant pressure too low) sets and the countdown begins. Because the pump is inside the tank, a pump failure typically means the whole tank unit is replaced. We confirm pump failure with a live pressure test before quoting the unit.
Tank heater element — P20BA, P20B9
The heating element in the tank unit prevents AdBlue freezing. When it fails, P20BA or P20B9 sets. On the Crafter the heater cannot be replaced independently — the tank unit is a sealed assembly. Faults appear in winter but an open-circuit element can set codes at any time of year.
Downstream NOx sensor degradation — P20EE, P229F
The sensor after the SCR catalyst drifts with age and reports higher NOx than actual. P20EE sets when the ECU calculates poor catalyst efficiency. P229F sets when both sensors disagree beyond tolerance. The Crafter shares the VAG NOx sensor platform — sensor part numbers are often common with the Transporter T6.
Dosing injector crystallisation — P204F
Urea deposits build up around the Crafter's injector nozzle and reduce dosing below the ECU command. P204F (reductant system performance) logs. We clean or replace the injector on site.
Contaminated fluid — P207F
Incorrect fluid, water ingress or degraded stock triggers P207F (reductant quality performance). The quality sensor is part of the tank unit. We verify fluid concentration with a refractometer before condemning the sensor.
Live-data diagnosis on a VW Crafter
We use VAG manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment. The Crafter provides a comprehensive set of measured values for the SCR system that allow precise fault isolation.
Full DTC read with freeze-frame data
Every stored and pending code is read from the engine and SCR modules. Freeze-frame snapshots captured at the moment of failure — exhaust temperature, dosing rate, pump pressure — narrow the suspect list immediately.
Pump pressure test via live data
The pump is commanded on and live pressure is compared to the VAG specification. Low or unstable pressure confirms a failing pump unit. Stable pressure shifts focus to the injector and NOx sensors.
NOx sensor readings under load
Both sensors are monitored in parts per million at varying engine load. The downstream reading should drop sharply when dosing is active. A flat or sluggish downstream trace with correct pressure indicates sensor failure or catalyst deterioration.
Injector dosing quantity check
Commanded versus actual dosing volume is compared through live data. A shortfall confirms a blocked or partially crystallised injector.
Heater circuit and fluid quality
The heater is commanded on and current draw measured. Fluid concentration is checked with a refractometer. Both checks are quick and rule out or confirm heater failure and contamination in minutes.
How the Crafter AdBlue repair works
The outcome is a Crafter that starts without restriction, drives with no warning on the dash and has verified SCR function. Fixed price before work starts. No fix, no fee. Written warranty.
Injector cleaning and fluid replacement are typically same-visit repairs. Tank unit work requires the part to be ordered — we complete full diagnosis on the first visit, quote the fixed price and return to fit.
Countdown cleared and start verified
After the repair all codes are cleared and the countdown confirmed gone. The engine is started and restarted to prove the lockout has released.
SCR function verified with live data
Dosing pressure, both NOx sensors and heater status are monitored while the engine runs at operating temperature. Any deviation triggers further investigation before we leave.
Written warranty
Every repair carries a written warranty.
- Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Covers callout, diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid drain and refill, or wiring repair.
- NOx sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis The Crafter shares sensor part numbers with other VAG platforms. Quoted once diagnosis confirms the failed sensor.
- Tank unit replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis The Crafter's integrated tank unit contains pump, heater and level sensor. Replacement cost includes the complete assembly. Quoted before the part is ordered.
- Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Where more than one fault exists — such as a sensor and a failing tank unit — we quote the full scope before any work begins.
Software path — discussed only after diagnosis
Physical repair comes first on every Crafter callout. Software modification is raised only when a component has failed and replacement cost is disproportionate, or when the owner requests it after a clear explanation.
Countdown and dash warning are removed.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
The Crafter tank unit explained
The VW Crafter uses an integrated AdBlue tank unit where the pump, heater, level sensor and quality sensor are combined into a single module. This is a similar design philosophy to the Mercedes Sprinter and PSA Boxer/Relay/Ducato — but the Crafter unit is a VAG-specific part.
When the pump or heater fails, the whole unit must be replaced because the components are sealed inside the housing. This makes tank unit faults more expensive than a standalone pump replacement on a vehicle like the Ford Transit. We always confirm the tank unit is the root cause with a live pressure and heater test before quoting the replacement.
Model years and engine variants we see
We service every Crafter fitted with the 2.0 TDI from the EA288 family. This includes the second-generation Crafter from 2017 onward in 102 PS, 122 PS, 140 PS and 177 PS outputs. All share the same SCR architecture and tank unit design.
The first-generation Crafter (2006–2016) used a 2.5 TDI without AdBlue on earlier models and a 2.0 TDI on later ones. If you are unsure which engine your Crafter has, give us the registration when you call and we confirm immediately.
Speed limiting before lockout
Some Crafter ECU calibrations impose a 50 mph speed limit before the full start lockout. The dash may display a torque-limitation warning alongside the countdown. This is the ECU progressively restricting performance to encourage repair.
The speed limit lifts once the fault is resolved and codes are cleared. If you are already speed-limited, the vehicle is safe to drive at reduced speed to a location where it can be worked on. Call 0203 038 8555 and we attend on site.
Frequently asked questions
What does "No engine start possible" mean on a VW Crafter?
It means the ECU has detected an SCR fault and is counting down the remaining miles before it prevents the engine from starting. At zero the engine will not crank after the next ignition-off. Call 0203 038 8555 and we resolve the fault on site.
How much to fix AdBlue on a VW Crafter?
From £249 for diagnosis and straightforward repairs. Tank unit or sensor replacement is quoted at a fixed price after diagnosis. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.
Can I replace just the AdBlue pump on a Crafter?
On the second-generation Crafter the pump is part of an integrated tank unit containing the pump, heater and level sensor. If the pump fails, the whole unit is replaced. We confirm pump failure with a live pressure test before quoting.
What is P20E8 on a VW Crafter?
P20E8 is reductant pressure too low. On the Crafter it typically points to the integrated pump inside the tank unit. We test live pressure against the VAG specification to confirm before recommending replacement.
Can I drive my Crafter with the AdBlue warning on?
You can drive while the countdown is active but every mile reduces the remaining distance. Some Crafters also limit speed to 50 mph before lockout. At zero the engine will not restart. Park somewhere accessible and call us.
Is the Crafter AdBlue system the same as the Transporter T6?
They share the VAG EA288 platform and some sensor part numbers, but the tank unit and pump configuration differ. The diagnostic process and fault codes are similar. We service both models.
