Fault code P20E8
P20E8: Reductant Pressure Too Low
P20E8 means the AdBlue pump cannot build enough pressure to meet the ECU target. Top causes are a failed pump, a crystallised injector leaking pressure, a blocked supply line or a faulty pressure sensor. The countdown starts once the code confirms. Park safely and call us — we diagnose on-site with live pressure data and fix the root cause. From £249, no fix no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.

The part behind this code: AdBlue pump. Every other code: AdBlue fault codes.
What P20E8 looks like on the dash
The driver sees an AdBlue warning light and a countdown — miles, restarts or both depending on the manufacturer. Ford Transit shows "X miles to no restart". Mercedes Sprinter displays remaining restarts. The engine runs normally until zero, then the ECU blocks starting after ignition off.
P20E8 is a pressure-circuit code. The ECU commands the pump to build a target pressure — typically 5 to 9 bar — and the actual reading falls short. Once the discrepancy persists across a calibrated number of drive cycles, the code matures from pending to confirmed and the countdown begins.
P20E8 frequently appears alongside P20EE (catalyst efficiency below threshold) and P204F (reductant system performance). The companion codes are consequences of the pressure shortfall — not enough AdBlue reaches the catalyst, so conversion drops. Fixing the pressure fault resolves the companion codes.
What causes P20E8
P20E8 is always a pressure-side fault. The AdBlue system cannot deliver fluid at the required pressure. These are the causes we find, most common first.
Failed or weak AdBlue pump
The pump motor wears, the diaphragm cracks, or internal valves leak. Output pressure drops below the ECU target. On Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet the pump is integrated into the tank unit — the entire module is replaced. On Ford Transit Custom the chassis-rail pump corrodes from road salt.
Crystallised dosing injector leaking pressure
Crystal build-up around the nozzle holds the injector slightly open. Pressure bleeds off between dosing events and the rail cannot hold target. Common on Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue and VW Crafter 2.0 TDI. Cleaning or replacing the injector restores pressure.
Blocked supply line or filter
Crystallised AdBlue blocks the line between the tank and the pump, or the inline filter restricts flow. The pump cavitates — it runs but cannot draw enough fluid to build pressure. On VAG EA288 platforms the inline filter is a known restriction point.
Faulty pressure sensor
The sensor on the pump outlet or dosing rail reads incorrectly. The ECU sees low pressure even though actual delivery is normal. A comparison between the sensor reading and a manual gauge confirms the fault. Less common but straightforward to replace.
Wiring or connector fault on the pump circuit
Corroded connectors or chafed wiring reduce voltage to the pump motor. The pump runs slowly and cannot reach target pressure. On Sprinter and Crafter the underbody loom is exposed to road spray and salt. A pin-test at the connector identifies the drop.
Frozen or gelled fluid in cold weather
AdBlue freezes at −11 °C. If the tank heater has failed, the fluid gels and the pump cannot draw it. The code sets during the first cold start of the day and may clear once the engine bay warms the lines. A heater current test confirms whether the heater is working.
Live-data checks we run for P20E8
P20E8 is a pressure code, so the diagnosis centres on the pump, the rail, the injector seal and the supply path.
Pump pressure vs ECU target
We command the pump on and graph actual rail pressure against the target. A healthy pump reaches target within seconds. A weak pump climbs slowly and plateaus below specification. No rise at all points to a dead pump or a completely blocked supply.
Injector leak-down test
With the pump building pressure and the injector not commanded to fire, we monitor whether the rail holds steady. A dropping reading indicates the injector is leaking internally or the nozzle seal has failed. On Transit EcoBlue, visible crystals around the bung confirm the finding.
Supply line flow check
We disconnect the line at the pump inlet and confirm fluid flows freely from the tank. Restricted or no flow points to a blocked line, a clogged filter or a frozen section. On VAG platforms the inline filter is checked separately.
Pressure sensor validation
We compare the sensor PID against expected readings at commanded pump speeds. A sensor that reads zero or reads a fixed value regardless of pump state is confirmed faulty.
Heater current draw (cold weather)
If the fault appeared during cold weather we measure heater resistance and current draw when commanded on. Open circuit or low draw confirms heater failure, which can cause gelling and trigger P20E8 as a secondary symptom.
Freeze-frame data
Engine speed, coolant temperature, ambient temperature and dosing status at the moment the code set. A freeze-frame captured at low ambient temperature points toward a heater or freezing issue. A capture at normal temperature points toward pump or injector hardware.
Repair path for P20E8
Once live data identifies the failed component, we quote a fixed price and carry out the repair on-site. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
Pump replacements on tank-integrated systems require dropping the tank module. We carry the tools and replacement units for the most common platforms. If a specific part needs ordering, we diagnose on the first visit and return to fit at the agreed price.
- Diagnosis and straightforward repair: From £249 Covers callout, live-data diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, line clearance, filter replacement or wiring repair.
- Pump module or tank unit replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Tank-integrated units on Boxer, Relay, Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter are higher cost than standalone pumps. Quoted before parts are ordered.
- Pressure sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Quoted once live-data testing confirms the sensor reading does not match actual pressure.
- Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Where more than one part has failed — for example a weak pump and a blocked line — we quote the full scope before proceeding.
Software path — only after diagnosis
Physical repair is the first option. Software modification of the SCR pressure monitoring is discussed only when replacement cost is disproportionate or the owner requests it after a full explanation.
The original ECU calibration is read, the SCR pressure strategy is adjusted, and the file is written back. Countdown removed, dash warning cleared.
We explain the legal and practical position before any software work. Repair is always offered first.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Can I drive with P20E8?
The engine runs normally while the countdown is active. P20E8 does not reduce power or affect braking. The danger is the countdown — each mile driven brings the vehicle closer to a no-start lockout at zero.
If the countdown is above 500 miles, you have time to book a convenient callout. Below 500 miles, drive to a safe and accessible location — your driveway, a work yard, or a level car park — and call 0203 038 8555. Do not risk switching off where a no-start would block access or traffic.
Codes that appear with P20E8
P20EE (SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold) is the most frequent companion. It sets because the pressure shortfall means the catalyst is not receiving enough AdBlue. P204F (reductant system performance) is a broader efficiency code that often accompanies P20E8 for the same reason.
P20E9 (reductant pressure too high) can appear in the history if the pump over-pressured before failing, or if the pressure sensor output is erratic. P2BAD (NOx exceedance) sets after sustained high tailpipe NOx caused by the dosing shortfall. Fixing P20E8 at the root resolves the companions.
Why topping up AdBlue does not fix P20E8
P20E8 is a pressure fault, not a level fault. Adding fluid to the tank does not repair a weak pump, a blocked line or a leaking injector. The tank may already be full. The code will persist until the pressure circuit is diagnosed and repaired.
If the dash message specifically says the tank is empty, fill it to the recommended level. But if the warning is a countdown triggered by P20E8, topping up is irrelevant and can complicate diagnosis if the new fluid has a different batch quality.
Frequently asked questions
What does P20E8 mean?
P20E8 is a reductant pressure too low code. The AdBlue pump cannot build enough pressure to meet the ECU target. Causes include a failed pump, a leaking injector, a blocked supply line or a faulty pressure sensor. Live-data testing identifies which.
P20E8 Ford Transit fix
On Ford Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue, P20E8 is often caused by a corroded chassis-rail pump or a crystallised injector leaking pressure. We test the pump output and injector seal on-site and fix the root cause. From £249, fixed price before we start.
Can I drive with P20E8?
Yes, while the countdown is running. The engine is not affected. But at zero the ECU blocks restarts. If the countdown is low, park somewhere accessible and call 0203 038 8555.
P20E8 repair cost UK
Diagnosis and repair from £249. If the pump or tank unit needs replacing, we quote a fixed price after diagnosis before ordering parts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.
P20E8 Peugeot Boxer repair
