Fault code P204F
P204F: Reductant System Performance
P204F is a broad reductant system performance code. The ECU has detected that AdBlue dosing is not meeting the expected standard across one or more drive cycles. Top causes are a crystallised injector, a weak pump, contaminated fluid or a heater failure in cold weather. The countdown starts once the code confirms. Park safely and call us. We diagnose on-site with live data and fix the root cause. From £249, no fix no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.

The part behind this code: AdBlue injector. Every other code: AdBlue fault codes.
What P204F looks like on the dash
The driver sees the standard AdBlue warning — amber or red depending on manufacturer — followed by a countdown. Ford Transit displays remaining miles. Mercedes Sprinter shows restarts. P204F does not have its own unique dash message. The vehicle may also display a generic "emissions fault" message alongside the countdown.
P204F is a system-level code. Unlike P20E8 (pressure too low) or P20EE (catalyst efficiency below threshold), P204F does not point to a single subsystem. The ECU sets it when the overall dosing performance — quantity delivered versus quantity commanded — falls outside tolerance over a calibrated window.
Because P204F is broad, it rarely appears alone. The most common companions are P20EE, P20E8 and P207F. The companion code usually narrows the root cause. When P204F is the only code, the fault is often intermittent — a partially blocked injector, a marginal pump, or fluid that is just outside specification.
What causes P204F
P204F flags when the overall reductant system is underperforming. The root cause sits somewhere in the dosing chain — from the fluid in the tank through the pump, lines, injector and into the exhaust. These are the faults we find, most frequent first.
Partially crystallised dosing injector
Urea deposits restrict the nozzle without fully blocking it. The injector still fires, but the volume delivered is below the ECU command. Ford Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue are particularly prone. Cleaning or replacing the injector restores flow.
Marginal pump output
The pump builds pressure but not consistently. It reaches target on some cycles and falls short on others. The ECU calculates a running average and flags P204F once the deviation exceeds tolerance. On Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet the integrated tank unit develops internal wear over time.
Contaminated or degraded fluid
Fluid diluted below 32.5 % urea concentration still doses, but the catalyst conversion rate drops. The ECU sees that the commanded quantity is not producing the expected NOx reduction and sets P204F. Contamination from water, fuel or old stock is confirmed with a refractometer.
Tank heater failure in cold conditions
Below −11 °C AdBlue freezes. A failed heater means the fluid gels and the pump cavitates or delivers inconsistent volume. P204F sets alongside P20BA (heater performance) during cold weather. On Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter and Fiat Ducato the heater is integrated into the tank unit.
Restricted supply line or filter
Partial blockage in the feed line or inline filter starves the pump intermittently. The pump copes at low demand but falls short at high dosing rates under load. VAG EA288 platforms have an inline filter that crystallises and restricts flow gradually.
Wiring or connector fault on the dosing circuit
A high-resistance connection on the pump or injector loom drops voltage under load. The component works at idle but underperforms when demand increases. Road-salt corrosion on the underbody loom is the usual cause on Transit, Sprinter and Crafter.
Live-data checks we run for P204F
P204F is a system-level code, so the diagnosis covers the entire dosing chain rather than a single component.
Dosing pressure vs target under load
We graph actual pump pressure against the ECU target while the engine is under load. A consistent shortfall points to the pump. An intermittent dip points to a supply restriction or marginal wiring.
Injector flow and volume test
We command a dosing event and measure actual volume delivered against the ECU request. A deficit confirms a restricted nozzle. On Ford EcoBlue we also inspect the injector bung for visible crystal deposits.
Fluid quality — sensor vs refractometer
The on-board quality sensor reading is compared against a refractometer sample from the tank. A mismatch means contamination or a drifting quality sensor. Concentration below specification is confirmed and the fluid is drained.
Heater current draw
We measure heater resistance and current draw when commanded on. Open circuit confirms heater failure. Low current suggests a partial element break. This check is prioritised when the freeze-frame shows low ambient temperature.
Downstream NOx reading under load
We monitor the downstream NOx sensor to confirm whether the catalyst is converting. If dosing looks correct but NOx remains high, the catalyst or the sensor is at fault — not the dosing system.
Freeze-frame and fault history
We read the conditions at the moment P204F set — engine speed, load, exhaust temperature, ambient temperature and fluid level. The fault history shows how many times the code has matured and whether companion codes set before or after P204F.
Repair path for P204F
The fix depends on which part of the dosing chain is underperforming. We explain the live-data findings and quote a fixed price before any work starts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
Because P204F is a system-level code, a scatter-gun approach — replacing one part at a time — wastes money. Our live-data diagnosis identifies the specific weak point so the repair is targeted and the code does not return.
- Diagnosis and straightforward repair: From £249 Covers callout, full live-data diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid drain and refill, line clearance or wiring repair.
- Pump module or tank unit replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Tank-integrated units on Boxer, Relay, Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter cost more than standalone pumps. Quoted before parts are ordered.
- Heater or sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Heaters integrated into the tank unit require a full module replacement. Standalone heaters and sensors are quoted separately.
- Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Where more than one part is at fault — for example a marginal pump and a contaminated fluid supply — we quote the full scope before proceeding.
Software path — only after diagnosis
Physical repair is the first option. Software modification of the SCR dosing strategy is discussed only when component replacement cost is disproportionate or the owner requests it after a full explanation.
The original ECU calibration is read, the SCR monitoring strategy is adjusted, and the file is written back. Countdown removed, dash warning cleared.
We explain the legal and practical position before any software work. Repair is offered first.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Can I drive with P204F?
The vehicle is mechanically safe. P204F does not reduce engine power or affect braking. The countdown is the risk — each mile driven reduces the remaining distance or restarts. At zero, most vehicles block starting after ignition off.
If the countdown is above 500 miles you have time to book a convenient slot. Below 500 miles, park somewhere the vehicle can be worked on and call 0203 038 8555. Do not switch off in a location where a no-start would cause access problems.
Why P204F is often misdiagnosed
P204F does not name a specific component. Some workshops see the code and replace the part they stock — usually the pump or the injector — without confirming it is the root cause. The code returns within a few hundred miles because the real fault was elsewhere in the dosing chain.
We see vehicles that have had a pump replaced for P204F when the actual problem was contaminated fluid, or an injector replaced when the fault was a restricted supply line. Live-data diagnosis that tests every section of the dosing circuit prevents this waste. It costs less to diagnose properly once than to fit parts that do not fix the code.
Codes that commonly appear alongside P204F
P20EE (catalyst efficiency below threshold) appears with P204F when the dosing shortfall is severe enough to reduce conversion. P20E8 (pressure too low) accompanies P204F when the pump is the weak point. P207F (reductant quality performance) appears when contaminated fluid is the root cause.
When P204F appears alone, the fault is often intermittent or marginal. A partially blocked injector that still delivers most of its commanded volume, or a pump that dips below target only under high-load dosing, can trigger P204F without crossing the thresholds for more specific codes.
Frequently asked questions
What does P204F mean?
P204F is a reductant system performance code. The ECU has detected that the overall AdBlue dosing output does not match the commanded target over one or more drive cycles. The root cause can be the injector, pump, fluid, heater, supply line or wiring. Live-data testing identifies which.
P204F Ford Transit fix
On Ford Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue, P204F is most commonly caused by a partially crystallised dosing injector. We test injector flow on-site, clean or replace it, and verify dosing with live data. From £249, fixed price before we start.
Can I drive with P204F?
Yes, while the countdown runs. The engine and brakes are unaffected. But at zero the ECU blocks restarts. If below 500 miles on the countdown, park somewhere accessible and call 0203 038 8555.
P204F repair cost UK
Diagnosis and repair from £249. If a pump, heater or tank module needs replacing, we quote a fixed price after diagnosis. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.
Why does P204F keep coming back?
The code returns because the root cause was not identified. P204F is a system-level code with multiple possible sources. Replacing one part without live-data testing risks fitting the wrong component. A full dosing-chain diagnosis prevents repeat faults.
P204F Peugeot Boxer fix
On Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato, P204F is often caused by a marginal pump output from the integrated tank unit or contaminated fluid. We diagnose with live data, confirm the weak point and quote before starting work.
Is P204F the same as P20EE?
No. P204F flags when the dosing system underperforms overall. P20EE flags when the SCR catalyst conversion efficiency is below threshold — which may be caused by poor dosing, a sensor fault or a deteriorated catalyst. They often appear together but have different diagnostic paths.
