Fault code P207F

P207F: Reductant Quality Performance

P207F means the ECU has detected that the AdBlue fluid quality is outside specification. Top causes are contaminated fluid, a faulty quality sensor, water ingress into the tank, or old degraded stock. The countdown starts once the code confirms. Do not top up with more fluid until the cause is known. Call us — we test the fluid on-site with a refractometer and fix the root cause. From £249, no fix no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.

The part behind this code: AdBlue quality sensor. Every other code: AdBlue fault codes.

What P207F looks like on the dash

The driver sees an AdBlue warning and a countdown. Some vehicles display a specific "incorrect AdBlue" or "poor quality AdBlue" message alongside the countdown. Ford Transit shows remaining miles. Mercedes Sprinter and Vito show remaining restarts. The dash message may prompt the driver to refill with "correct" fluid, even when the tank is full.

P207F sets when the on-board quality sensor detects a urea concentration that deviates from the 32.5 % specification defined by ISO 22241. The ECU runs this check periodically — often at key-on or after a defined soak time. Once the reading falls outside tolerance for a calibrated number of checks, the code matures and the countdown begins.

P207F can appear alongside P20EE (catalyst efficiency below threshold) when diluted fluid reaches the catalyst and conversion drops. It can also appear with P204F (reductant system performance) as the ECU flags the overall dosing output as below standard.

What causes P207F

P207F is a fluid-quality code. The fault is either in the fluid itself or in the sensor measuring it. These are the causes we find, most frequent first.

  • Water contamination in the tank

Water enters through a damaged filler cap, a cracked tank, or condensation in a tank that sits partially empty for long periods. Even a small percentage of water dilutes the urea concentration below threshold. Commercial vehicles parked outdoors and motorhomes in winter storage are the most common cases.

  • Degraded or expired fluid

AdBlue has a shelf life. Fluid stored above 25 °C degrades faster. Fluid that has been in the tank for over 12 months — common on low-mileage motorhomes and seasonal vehicles — may fall below specification. The quality sensor detects the drift and P207F sets.

  • Wrong fluid or accidental contamination

Fuel, screenwash, or a non-ISO 22241 product accidentally added to the AdBlue tank. Even a small volume of the wrong fluid changes the concentration reading dramatically. The ECU flags P207F immediately or within a few key cycles.

  • Faulty quality sensor

The sensor itself drifts or fails. It reports a concentration outside specification even though the fluid is correct. A refractometer test of the actual fluid confirms the mismatch. On Mercedes Sprinter and Vito the quality sensor is integrated into the tank sender unit. On many Ford and VAG platforms it is a separate probe.

  • Crystal deposits on the sensor probe

Urea crystals form on the sensor element after repeated heat cycles. The crystal layer changes the reading and the ECU interprets it as poor-quality fluid. Cleaning the probe restores the correct reading. This is common on vehicles with short-journey use patterns.

  • Fuel spillage during filling

On some vehicles the AdBlue filler is close to the diesel filler. A splash of diesel into the AdBlue tank during filling is enough to alter the sensor reading. Even a few millilitres of diesel contaminate the fluid beyond the tolerance window.

Live-data checks we run for P207F

P207F diagnosis centres on confirming whether the fluid is genuinely out of specification or whether the sensor is reporting incorrectly.

  • Quality sensor reading vs refractometer

We read the on-board quality sensor value and compare it against a refractometer measurement of a tank sample. If the refractometer shows 32.5 % and the sensor reads outside tolerance, the sensor has failed. If both agree, the fluid is genuinely contaminated.

  • Crystal inspection on the sensor probe

We remove or access the quality sensor and inspect the probe for crystal build-up. A coated element returns an inaccurate reading. Cleaning restores normal output on many vehicles without replacing the part.

  • Tank contamination check

We draw a sample from the bottom of the tank where water and heavy contaminants settle. Visible separation, discolouration, or an abnormal smell indicates contamination beyond simple dilution.

  • Filler cap and tank seal inspection

A cracked or missing filler cap seal allows rainwater entry. We inspect the cap, the filler neck and the tank body for cracks, damage or signs of previous incorrect filling.

  • Downstream NOx sensor under load

If the fluid is contaminated, the catalyst conversion rate drops and the downstream NOx reading stays high. We confirm whether the fluid issue is actively affecting emissions performance or whether the code is sensor-driven only.

  • Freeze-frame conditions

Ambient temperature, soak time and fluid level at the moment the code set. A freeze-frame at high ambient temperature after a long soak period points to degraded fluid. A capture shortly after filling points to contamination from the new fluid or accidental wrong-fill.

Repair path for P207F

If the fluid is contaminated, we drain the tank, flush the lines and refill with certified ISO 22241 AdBlue. If the sensor is at fault, we clean or replace it. Fixed price before work starts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.

A drain-and-refill resolves most P207F cases on the first visit. If the quality sensor has failed, replacement is carried out the same day where the part is available. We clear the code and run a drive-cycle verification to confirm the countdown stays off.

  • Diagnosis, drain, flush and refill: From £249 Covers callout, refractometer test, full tank drain, line flush and refill with ISO 22241 certified fluid. Code cleared and verified.
  • Quality sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Quoted once refractometer confirms good fluid but the sensor reads out of tolerance. Sensor cost varies by make.
  • Tank sender unit replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis On vehicles where the quality sensor is integrated into the sender unit — Sprinter, Vito, Crafter — the whole module is replaced. Quoted before parts are ordered.

Software path — only after diagnosis

Physical repair is the first option. Software modification of the SCR quality monitoring is discussed only when sensor replacement cost is disproportionate or the owner requests it after a full explanation.

The original ECU calibration is read, the quality-monitoring strategy is adjusted, and the file is written back. Countdown removed, dash warning cleared.

We explain the legal and practical position before any software work. Repair is offered first.

Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.

Can I drive with P207F?

The vehicle is mechanically safe. P207F does not affect engine power, braking or steering. The countdown is the risk — each mile or key cycle reduces the remaining distance or restarts. At zero, most vehicles block starting after ignition off.

If the countdown is above 500 miles you have time to book a convenient callout. Below 500 miles, park somewhere accessible and call 0203 038 8555. Do not add more AdBlue until the cause is confirmed — topping up with fresh fluid on top of contaminated fluid dilutes the problem but does not resolve the code.

Why topping up AdBlue does not clear P207F

Adding fresh fluid to a tank that contains contaminated or degraded AdBlue dilutes the contaminant but does not remove it. The quality sensor takes a blended reading, and if the contaminant concentration is still outside tolerance the code remains. On some vehicles, the ECU requires the tank to be drained below a minimum level before it re-evaluates quality.

If fuel was accidentally added to the AdBlue tank, the entire system — tank, lines, pump and injector — must be flushed. Diesel residue clings to internal surfaces and continues to contaminate fresh fluid if only the tank is drained. We flush the complete circuit as part of the repair.

Preventing P207F from returning

Buy AdBlue from a reputable source that certifies ISO 22241 on the label. Avoid bulk containers that have been stored in direct sunlight or above 25 °C. Check that the filler cap seals properly — a cracked cap is the most common entry point for rainwater on commercial vehicles parked outdoors.

On motorhomes and seasonal vehicles, drain and refill the tank at the start of each season if the fluid has been sitting for more than 12 months. Fresh fluid costs far less than a quality-sensor replacement or a countdown emergency.

Frequently asked questions

What does P207F mean?

P207F is a reductant quality performance code. The ECU has detected that the AdBlue fluid concentration is outside the 32.5 % specification. The cause is contaminated or degraded fluid, or a faulty quality sensor. A refractometer test confirms which.

P207F Ford Transit fix

On Ford Transit and Transit Custom, P207F is usually caused by contaminated fluid or a drifting quality sensor. We test the fluid with a refractometer on-site. If contaminated, we drain, flush and refill. If the sensor has failed, we replace it. From £249.

Can I drive with P207F?

Yes, while the countdown runs. The engine is unaffected. But at zero the ECU blocks restarts. If the countdown is low, park somewhere accessible and call 0203 038 8555. Do not top up until the cause is confirmed.

P207F repair cost UK

Diagnosis, drain and refill from £249. If the quality sensor or tank sender unit needs replacing, we quote a fixed price after diagnosis. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.

Can wrong AdBlue cause P207F?

Yes. Non-ISO 22241 fluid, old stock, water contamination or accidental fuel spillage into the tank all cause the quality reading to fall outside specification. The ECU sets P207F once the deviation persists.

P207F Mercedes Sprinter repair

On Sprinter and Vito the quality sensor is integrated into the tank sender unit. If the sensor has failed, the whole module is replaced. We diagnose with a refractometer first to confirm whether the fluid or the sensor is at fault before quoting.

How do I stop P207F coming back?

Use ISO 22241 certified AdBlue from a reputable supplier. Check the filler cap seals properly. On motorhomes or seasonal vehicles, drain and refill the tank at the start of each season if the fluid has sat for more than 12 months.
