Fault code P20EE
P20EE: SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold
P20EE means the downstream NOx sensor is reading higher than the ECU expects after the SCR catalyst. Common causes are a crystallised dosing injector, a weak AdBlue pump, contaminated fluid or a deteriorated catalyst. Do not keep driving once the countdown is low — park safely and call us. We diagnose on-site with live data, fix the root cause and clear the countdown. From £249, no fix no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.

The part behind this code: AdBlue injector. Every other code: AdBlue fault codes.
What P20EE looks like on the dash
P20EE itself does not spell out on the instrument cluster. The driver sees an amber or red AdBlue warning followed by a countdown — remaining miles, remaining restarts, or both. Ford Transit and Transit Custom typically show "X miles to no restart". Mercedes Sprinter displays "Only X restarts possible". VAG vehicles may limit speed before blocking starts.
The ECU sets P20EE when the calculated SCR conversion efficiency drops below a calibrated threshold over a defined drive cycle. Once the code matures from pending to confirmed, the countdown begins. Clearing the code with a generic scan tool resets it temporarily, but the ECU recalculates efficiency within a few miles and the countdown returns.
P20EE often appears alongside P204F (reductant system performance), P20E8 (pressure too low), or P2BAD (NOx exceedance). When companion codes are present they usually point to the root cause — dosing hardware rather than the catalyst itself.
What causes P20EE
The code sets because the SCR catalyst is not converting enough NOx. That can be a genuine catalyst problem, but in practice a dosing shortfall is the more common trigger. These are the causes we find, in the order we find them.
Crystallised or blocked dosing injector
Urea crystals accumulate around the injector nozzle and restrict spray. Less AdBlue reaches the catalyst, conversion drops, and P20EE sets. This is the single most frequent cause on Ford Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue. Cleaning or replacing the injector on-site usually resolves the code.
Weak or failed AdBlue pump
The pump cannot build target pressure. The ECU detects the shortfall, sometimes logging P20E8 alongside P20EE. On Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato the pump is integrated into the tank unit — the whole module is replaced. Ford Transit Custom chassis-rail pumps corrode from road salt and fail.
Contaminated or degraded AdBlue fluid
Water ingress, old stock or fuel spillage dilutes the urea concentration below the 32.5 % specification. The catalyst receives weaker fluid and conversion drops. A refractometer test confirms contamination. We drain, flush and refill with ISO 22241 certified fluid.
Downstream NOx sensor drift
The sensing element degrades over time and over-reports NOx. The ECU calculates poor efficiency even though conversion is normal. Common on Mercedes Sprinter and Vito OM651 and OM654 after high mileage. Live-data comparison under load distinguishes a drifting sensor from a genuine conversion problem.
SCR catalyst deterioration
Thermal cycling and age degrade the catalyst washcoat. A genuinely spent catalyst cannot convert NOx regardless of dosing. This is more common on high-mileage vehicles — 150,000 miles and above. Live data shows correct dosing pressure and injector flow but the downstream NOx reading remains high.
Blocked supply line or filter
Crystallised AdBlue blocks the feed line between the tank and the pump. Pressure drops and dosing falls short. On VW Crafter 2.0 TDI and VAG EA288 platforms the inline filter is a known restriction point. Clearing the blockage restores flow and the code clears after a drive cycle.
Exhaust temperature too low for dosing
The ECU only commands AdBlue injection above a minimum exhaust temperature. A faulty exhaust temperature sensor can report a falsely low value, preventing dosing entirely. The catalyst receives no fluid and P20EE sets. Often seen on vehicles used for short urban journeys.
Live-data checks we run for P20EE
P20EE has multiple possible causes. Live data under running conditions separates a dosing shortfall from a sensor or catalyst problem.
Upstream vs downstream NOx comparison
Both NOx sensors are graphed in real time under load. A healthy system shows the downstream reading significantly lower than the upstream. If the gap is small, dosing or the catalyst is at fault. If the downstream reading is erratic or stuck, the sensor itself is suspect.
Dosing pressure and target comparison
We command the pump on and compare actual rail pressure against the ECU target. Low or fluctuating pressure points to a weak pump, a blocked line or a leaking injector seal. This test rules the entire pressure side in or out.
Injector flow and volume test
The ECU commands a dosing event and we monitor actual volume delivered. A crystallised nozzle delivers less than target. On Ford EcoBlue we also inspect the injector bung for crystal build-up — visible deposits confirm the diagnosis without further testing.
Fluid quality — sensor vs refractometer
We compare the on-board quality sensor reading with a refractometer measurement of the tank fluid. A mismatch means contamination or a faulty quality sensor. Either condition prevents correct dosing.
Exhaust temperature cross-check
We verify the pre-catalyst and post-catalyst temperature readings against expected values. If the exhaust temperature sensor reads low, the ECU inhibits dosing entirely. An independent probe confirms whether the sensor or the exhaust is genuinely cold.
Freeze-frame snapshot
The freeze-frame captured when P20EE set records engine speed, coolant temperature, exhaust temperature, dosing status and sensor voltages. It often points directly to the failed subsystem before we start the engine.
Repair path for P20EE
The fix depends on what the live data shows. A dosing shortfall is repaired at the injector, pump or supply line. A drifting sensor is replaced. A spent catalyst is a different conversation. We explain findings and quote a fixed price before work starts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
Most P20EE callouts on Transit, Sprinter and Crafter are resolved in a single visit once the root cause is identified. If a part needs ordering, we diagnose on the first visit, confirm the price and return to fit.
- Diagnosis and straightforward repair: From £249 Covers callout, full live-data diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, line clearance, fluid drain and refill, or wiring repair.
- NOx sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Sensor cost depends on make and position. Quoted once diagnosis confirms the sensor is at fault.
- Pump module or tank unit replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Tank-integrated units on Boxer, Relay, Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter cost more than standalone pumps. Quoted before parts are ordered.
- Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Where more than one part has failed — for example a blocked injector and a drifting NOx sensor — we quote the full scope before proceeding.
Software path — only after diagnosis
Diagnosis and physical repair come first. Software modification of the SCR system is discussed only when a component has failed and replacement cost is disproportionate, or when the owner specifically requests it.
A software modification reads the original ECU calibration, adjusts the SCR monitoring strategy and writes the file back. Countdown removed, dash warning cleared.
We explain the legal and practical position before any software work. Repair is always offered first.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Can I drive with P20EE?
The vehicle is mechanically safe. P20EE does not affect engine power, braking or steering. The risk is the countdown. Each mile driven reduces the remaining distance or restarts. Once the counter reaches zero and you switch the engine off, most vehicles will not restart until the fault is resolved.
If the countdown is above 500 miles you have time to book a callout at a convenient slot. Below 500 miles, park somewhere accessible — your driveway, a yard, or a well-lit car park with level ground. Do not risk switching off in a narrow street or multi-storey where a no-start would cause problems.
Do not top up AdBlue unless the dash specifically says the tank is low. Topping up does not clear P20EE. If the fluid is contaminated, adding more dilutes the problem further. Call 0203 038 8555 and tell us the code, the registration and the countdown reading.
Why clearing P20EE with a scan tool does not work
A generic code reader can erase P20EE from the fault memory. The warning light goes off and the countdown may reset briefly. The ECU then runs its efficiency monitor on the next qualifying drive cycle — usually within 10 to 30 miles — and if conversion is still below threshold the code sets again.
Repeated clearing without addressing the root cause can make diagnosis harder. Some ECUs increment a fault-maturity counter each time the code re-sets, and a higher maturity count can shorten the countdown or trigger additional restriction codes like P2BAD.
The only reliable resolution is identifying why conversion is low — dosing shortfall, sensor drift, or catalyst deterioration — and fixing that cause. Once the underlying problem is repaired and the code is cleared properly, the ECU recalculates efficiency and the countdown stays off.
Codes that commonly appear alongside P20EE
P204F (reductant system performance) appears with P20EE when the ECU detects a general dosing shortfall. P20E8 (reductant pressure too low) points specifically to the pump or pressure circuit. When either of these accompanies P20EE, the dosing hardware is almost certainly the root cause rather than the catalyst.
P229F (NOx sensor correlation) flags when the upstream and downstream sensors disagree beyond tolerance. P2BAD (NOx exceedance) sets after sustained high tailpipe NOx. Both are secondary codes — fixing the primary cause (P20EE plus its companion) resolves them as well.
Frequently asked questions
What does P20EE mean?
P20EE stands for SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1). The downstream NOx sensor is reading higher than the ECU expects after the catalyst. The root cause may be a dosing shortfall, a drifting sensor or a deteriorated catalyst. Live-data diagnosis under load identifies which.
P20EE Ford Transit fix
On Ford Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue, P20EE is most commonly caused by a crystallised dosing injector. We clean or replace the injector on-site, clear the code and verify conversion with live data. From £249, fixed price before we start.
Can I drive with P20EE?
You can drive while the countdown is active, but each mile reduces your remaining distance. At zero the ECU blocks restarts after ignition off. If below 500 miles, park somewhere accessible and call 0203 038 8555 to book a callout.
P20EE cost UK
Diagnosis and repair starts from £249. The total depends on which component has failed. We quote a fixed price after live-data diagnosis before any work begins. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.
P20EE Mercedes Sprinter repair
On Sprinter OM651 and OM654, P20EE is often caused by a drifting downstream NOx sensor or a dosing shortfall from a crystallised injector. We diagnose with live data on your driveway, confirm the failed component, and quote before starting work.
Why does P20EE keep coming back after clearing?
Clearing the code erases the fault memory but does not fix the root cause. The ECU recalculates SCR efficiency within a few drive cycles and re-sets the code if conversion is still below threshold. A proper live-data diagnosis identifies the cause so the repair sticks.
What codes appear with P20EE?
P204F and P20E8 are the most common companions — both point to a dosing shortfall. P229F flags sensor correlation issues. P2BAD sets after sustained high tailpipe NOx. Fixing the primary dosing or sensor fault typically resolves the companion codes as well.
