What the AdBlue dash message means
Modern diesels inject AdBlue — a 32.5% urea solution — into the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. The catalyst converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. When the system detects a fault, the ECU logs a code and starts a countdown. At zero, the vehicle restricts engine restarts.
Ford shows "AdBlue: see handbook" or "Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor" and counts down in miles. Mercedes displays "Only X restarts possible". VAG vehicles show "AdBlue malfunction! Speed limited to 50 mph" or a restart countdown. Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall display a spanner with a mileage countdown. BMW shows "Exhaust Fluid System Fault" with a restart counter. The code behind the message is where diagnosis starts.
Common causes of AdBlue faults
An AdBlue warning rarely means the fluid is simply low. Most faults involve a failed component, contaminated fluid or degraded wiring.
Crystallised dosing injector
The dosing injector sits in the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. Heat and poor fluid cause urea crystals to block the nozzle, triggering P20EE (SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold) or P204F (reductant system performance). Common on Ford Transit and Transit Custom.
Failed pump or pressure sensor
The AdBlue pump pressurises fluid to the pressure the ECU targets. A failed pump or faulty pressure sensor sets P20E8 (reductant pressure too low). On PSA-platform vans — Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay, Fiat Ducato with the 2.0 BlueHDi — the pump is integrated into the tank unit, so pump failure means the entire module is replaced.
Tank heater element failure
AdBlue freezes at −11 °C, so every system has a tank heater. A failed element sets P20BA (reductant heater performance) or P20B9 (reductant heater control circuit). On Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Relay and Ducato the heater is integrated into the tank assembly — the whole unit is replaced rather than just the element.
NOx sensor failure
Two NOx sensors straddle the SCR catalyst — upstream measures incoming NOx, downstream confirms conversion. Failure sets P2200 (NOx sensor circuit bank 1 sensor 1), P2201 (bank 1 sensor 2) or P229F (NOx sensor correlation). Mercedes Sprinter and Vito are well known for downstream NOx sensor failures.
Poor fluid quality or contamination
AdBlue must meet ISO 22241. Contamination with water, fuel or old fluid sets P207F (reductant quality performance). The quality sensor reads concentration; if it is out of specification the ECU flags the fault immediately. We drain, flush and refill with certified fluid.
Wiring corrosion near the exhaust
AdBlue wiring runs close to the exhaust and underneath the vehicle. Road salt, vibration and heat degrade connectors. Intermittent faults with no clear component failure often trace to corroded pins on the NOx sensor or pump connector.
What we check on every callout
We bring dealer-level diagnostic equipment to every job. Diagnosis means reading live data while the system operates — not just pulling codes.
Dosing pressure and injector flow
We command the pump on and monitor rail pressure against the ECU target. A blocked injector shows high pressure with low actual dosing quantity. It rules the pressure side in or out.
Upstream NOx sensor (pre-catalyst)
We read upstream NOx in parts per million at idle and under load. A healthy sensor responds within seconds to throttle changes. A lazy or stuck reading — flat regardless of load — points to sensor failure or a wiring fault on the signal circuit.
Downstream NOx sensor (post-catalyst)
The downstream sensor confirms catalyst efficiency. We compare upstream and downstream readings; a working catalyst shows a significant drop. If both read similar values, the catalyst may be poisoned or the downstream sensor has failed.
Heater circuit current draw
We measure heater resistance at the connector and watch current draw when commanded on. An open-circuit heater reads infinite resistance. We test both the tank heater and the supply-line heater where fitted.
Fluid quality and level sensor
We compare the quality sensor reading against a refractometer check of the actual fluid. A mismatch indicates a faulty sensor or contaminated fluid. The level sensor is checked separately — a stuck float gives a false low reading and triggers P203F (reductant level sensor performance).
Crystal inspection and wiring integrity
We physically inspect the injector bung for crystal deposits and check every connector in the AdBlue loom for corrosion, backed-out pins and chafed insulation.
Repair options and pricing
Every repair starts with diagnosis. We identify the failed component, quote the fix and only proceed with your approval. Fixed price before work begins. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
The repair path depends on what diagnosis reveals. A crystallised injector can often be cleaned on-site. A tank-integrated pump module on a Boxer or Relay takes longer. NOx sensor replacement is straightforward once the correct sensor is identified — upstream and downstream are different parts, and fitting the wrong one is a common mistake we see from previous attempts.
Injector clean or replacement
Ultrasonic cleaning restores most blocked injectors. If the nozzle is damaged we replace it.
Pump module or pressure sensor
On vehicles with a separate pump (Transit Custom, Sprinter, Crafter) we replace the unit and re-prime. On PSA vans with a tank-integrated module we replace the entire sender unit and recalibrate the level sensor.
NOx sensor replacement
We replace the failed sensor with an OE-specification part and run an SCR adaptation reset.
Tank heater repair
Where the heater is separate from the tank we replace just the element. Where integrated (Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Ducato) the whole unit is replaced.
Fluid drain, flush and refill
Contaminated fluid is drained, lines flushed, and the tank refilled with ISO 22241 certified AdBlue. We recheck the quality sensor reading after refill.
- Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Covers callout, diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid drain and refill, or wiring repair. Fixed price quoted before we start.
- NOx sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Sensor cost varies by make and position. We quote once diagnosis confirms which sensor has failed.
- Pump module or tank unit: Fixed price after diagnosis Tank-integrated units cost more than standalone pumps. We quote before any parts are ordered.
- Tank heater replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Standalone elements cost less than integrated tank assemblies.
- Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Some vehicles have more than one failed component. We quote the full scope so there are no surprises.
Software path — when repair is not viable
Repair is always the first option. Software modification of the SCR system is a second path, considered only when the component has failed and replacement cost is disproportionate, or when the vehicle owner requests it after a full explanation.
A software job reads the original ECU calibration, modifies the SCR strategy so the system no longer flags the fault, and writes the file back. The dash warning is cleared and the countdown removed.
We explain the legal and practical position before any software work. Modification of the emissions system is a separate matter from the MOT test, and the regulatory position may change. We make sure you understand this before we proceed.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Makes and models we fix most
We work on every diesel with an AdBlue system — cars, vans and motorhomes. These makes account for the largest share of our callouts.
Ford Transit and Transit Custom
The 2.0 EcoBlue is a regular callout. Dosing injector crystallisation, corroded pump modules on the chassis rail, and tank heater failures in winter. Ford's integrated pump-and-sender module on the Custom means pump failure is a tank-unit job.
Mercedes Sprinter and Vito
Sprinter (W906, W907) and Vito (W447) are known for NOx sensor failures, especially downstream. The SCR system has two NOx sensors, a dosing injector, separate pump and tank-mounted heater. Mercedes-specific routines are needed for adaptation resets.
Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay, Fiat Ducato
These share the PSA/Stellantis platform. The 2.2 BlueHDi uses a tank-integrated pump and heater module — pump failure means the whole unit is replaced. Ducato-based motorhomes are frequent callouts because AdBlue contamination from mixed sources is more likely.
VW Crafter and VAG TDI
Newer Crafters on the MAN platform have their own AdBlue system with similar failure patterns — NOx sensors, dosing injectors, heater circuits. VAG TDI cars (Golf, Passat, A4, A6) commonly present with P204F and P20EE, often traced to the injector or fluid quality.
BMW diesel, Vauxhall Vivaro/Movano, Iveco Daily
BMW models use an integrated tank module; P20EE and P20BA are common codes. Vivaro and Movano AdBlue pump and heater failures are frequent in fleets running urban routes. On the Iveco Daily, injector crystallisation and NOx sensor faults are regular jobs.
Why parts-swapping without diagnosis fails
P20EE does not mean the dosing injector is faulty. It means SCR catalyst efficiency is below threshold. The cause could be a blocked injector, a failed NOx sensor giving the ECU wrong data, contaminated fluid, low pump pressure, or a wiring fault. Replacing the injector when the downstream NOx sensor is the actual fault achieves nothing.
We often attend vehicles where multiple parts have been replaced and the warning persists. Sometimes the real cause is a corroded connector pin dropping the NOx signal. Diagnosis with live data eliminates this cycle.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AdBlue repair cost in the UK?
Diagnosis and fix starts from £249. The final price depends on what diagnosis reveals — injector cleaning is at the lower end, a tank-integrated pump module costs more. We quote a fixed price before work starts and you only pay if we fix the agreed fault.
What does fault code P20EE mean on my van?
P20EE means SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold. Possible causes include a blocked dosing injector, failed NOx sensor, contaminated fluid or low pump pressure. It does not point to one specific part, which is why live-data diagnosis is needed before replacing anything.
Can I drive with an AdBlue warning light on?
You can drive while the countdown is running, but the vehicle restricts restarts at zero. On many vehicles, once you switch off after zero the engine will not start again until the fault is resolved. If your countdown is low, park somewhere the vehicle can be worked on and call us before it reaches zero.
Why does my AdBlue warning keep coming back after repair?
Usually because the wrong component was replaced. P20EE can be caused by several parts. If the actual failed component was not identified through live-data diagnosis, the new part will not fix the fault.
What does P20E8 reductant pressure too low mean?
P20E8 means the AdBlue pump cannot build enough pressure. The cause is usually a failed pump, blocked supply line or faulty pressure sensor. On PSA-platform vans (Boxer, Relay, Ducato) the pump is in the tank unit, so failure means replacing the whole module.
Do you repair AdBlue faults on motorhomes?
Yes. We attend motorhomes on Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter and other chassis. We drain, flush and refill with certified fluid where quality is a factor.
Can a software update cause an AdBlue fault?
Yes. Manufacturer updates sometimes recalibrate SCR thresholds. A component that was marginal can be flagged after an update tightens the tolerance. We check the calibration version as part of diagnosis.
