Fiat Ducato AdBlue Repair: Vans, Motorhomes and Campers
The Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet Euro 6 is the most common motorhome base vehicle in the UK — and the one we see most often with AdBlue faults after seasonal storage. Fluid degrades when the vehicle sits for months, heater elements fail from thermal cycling, and pump modules lose pressure. We attend your driveway, storage yard or campsite. From £249, fixed price before we start. No fix, no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.

Ducato dash warnings and the motorhome problem
The Ducato shows "AdBlue: refill to restart engine" or a countdown in kilometres depending on the fault. A genuine low-tank message clears after a top-up and a short drive cycle. A component fault does not clear — it needs diagnosis.
Motorhome owners face a particular problem. The vehicle is parked from October to March. AdBlue degrades over time, the heater element sits unused through freeze-thaw cycles, and the first start of the season triggers a fault that was months in the making. A countdown that starts on the morning of your first trip is not unusual.
Why Ducato motorhomes and vans develop AdBlue faults
The Ducato 2.3 MultiJet uses the same Sevel SCR platform as the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay. Motorhome-based Ducatos have additional failure patterns driven by seasonal use, extended storage and restricted site access.
Fluid degradation from seasonal storage
AdBlue has a shelf life of roughly 12 months at moderate temperatures. In a tank exposed to summer heat and winter cold, concentration drops below the 32.5% threshold within a single off-season. The quality sensor detects the drift and logs P207F (reductant quality performance). The ECU starts the countdown before the vehicle has left the driveway.
Tank heater failure — P20BA, P20B9
The heater prevents AdBlue freezing at −11 °C. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles during winter storage stress the heating element. P20BA (reductant heater performance) sets on the first cold start of the season. On the Ducato the heater is built into the tank module — the whole unit is replaced.
Pump pressure loss — P20E8
The pump sits inside the tank module. Seals harden during extended periods without use, and crystallised fluid residue can block internal passages. P20E8 (reductant pressure too low) sets when the pump cannot reach the target rail pressure. Common after winter layup.
Crystallised dosing injector — P204F
Urea residue bakes onto the injector nozzle during DPF regeneration heat cycles. Dosing volume drops below threshold and P204F (reductant system performance) sets. We remove and clean or replace the injector on-site.
NOx sensor fault — P229F, P2200
Downstream NOx sensor drift is gradual but accelerated by thermal cycling on parked vehicles. P229F (NOx sensor correlation) or P2200 (sensor circuit) sets when readings deviate beyond the ECU tolerance. Live-data graphing under load identifies whether the sensor or the catalyst is the root cause.
Wiring and connector corrosion on stored vehicles
Motorhomes parked outdoors over winter accumulate moisture in underbody connectors. Corroded pins in the AdBlue loom cause intermittent codes that reappear after clearing. Ducato conversions with rear-mounted bike racks can also chafe wiring near the tank.
On-site diagnosis for Ducato vans and motorhomes
We attend wherever the vehicle is parked — your home, a storage compound or a campsite. Every callout starts with a full code read, then targeted live-data tests.
Code read with freeze-frame analysis
All stored and pending codes are read from the engine and SCR modules. Freeze-frame snapshots show the exact conditions at fault onset — whether it happened during cold start, driving or parked regeneration.
Pump pressure and flow test
The pump is commanded on and live rail pressure monitored against the Fiat specification. A pump that cannot reach target or fluctuates under load confirms module failure.
Heater element resistance and current draw
We measure the heater circuit at the tank module connector. Open circuit or low current draw confirms a failed element. On the Ducato this means module replacement because the heater is not separately serviceable.
Fluid concentration and quality sensor check
Refractometer reading compared to the on-board quality sensor output. Degraded fluid reads below 32.5% urea. If the sensor itself has drifted, it shows a mismatch against a known-good sample.
NOx sensor live-data comparison
Upstream and downstream NOx readings are graphed under varying throttle. Healthy conversion shows a clear drop across the catalyst. A lazy or stuck sensor is identified before recommending replacement.
Getting the Ducato back on the road
The goal is a vehicle that starts, drives and shows a clean dash — whether it is heading to a job site or a campsite in Cornwall. Fixed price before we start. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
Many Ducato repairs complete in a single visit. Tank module orders typically arrive next working day. We diagnose on the first visit, confirm the price and return to fit.
Countdown cleared, engine restart confirmed
Once the root fault is repaired, all codes are cleared and the countdown resets. We confirm engine starting and monitor for any returning codes during a short drive cycle.
Full SCR live-data sign-off
Dosing pressure, both NOx sensors and heater status are verified within specification before we leave. No values are left marginal.
Written warranty
Every repair comes with a written warranty.
- Diagnosis and straightforward repair: From £249 Callout, diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid drain and refill, or wiring repair.
- Tank module replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Integrated pump and heater unit. Quoted once diagnosis confirms module failure. Part cost varies by model year.
- NOx sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Upstream or downstream sensor fitted. Both checked to prevent repeat faults.
Software option — discussed after diagnosis
Repair is always the first recommendation. Software modification is discussed only when the failed component is uneconomical to replace or the owner requests it after a full explanation.
We explain the legal and practical position before any software work proceeds.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Motorhome-specific considerations
Ducato-based motorhomes often have restricted underbody access compared to a panel van. Habitation units, water tanks and waste pipes can sit close to the AdBlue tank. Let us know the converter brand — Swift, Bailey, Autotrail, Bürstner or similar — when you call so we bring the right access tools.
If the motorhome is at a campsite or storage yard, confirm there is enough room to work around the nearside rear of the vehicle. Level ground and a clear metre each side is enough. We do not need a ramp or pit.
For motorhomes coming out of winter storage, a fluid drain and refill before the first trip is a low-cost preventive step. If the fluid has been in the tank for more than six months, replacing it avoids the most common seasonal fault trigger.
Ducato panel vans and chassis cabs
Commercial Ducatos used as delivery vans, tippers and chassis cabs see different fault patterns from motorhomes. Higher mileage means more injector crystallisation and pump wear. Lower downtime means faults are caught earlier by the dash countdown rather than surfacing after storage.
Fleet operators running multiple Ducatos benefit from batch diagnosis — we attend the yard and check every vehicle in one session. See our fleet page for volume arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
Can you repair my Ducato motorhome AdBlue fault at a campsite?
Yes. We attend campsites, storage yards, driveways and anywhere the vehicle is parked. We need level ground and about a metre of clearance around the nearside rear. Confirm the site address and any access restrictions when you call.
My Ducato has been parked all winter — why is the AdBlue warning showing?
AdBlue degrades during storage. Concentration drops below the ECU threshold and the quality sensor triggers a fault code. The heater element can also fail from repeated freeze-thaw cycles while parked. Both are common after winter layup. We diagnose and resolve on the first visit.
Is the Ducato AdBlue system the same as the Peugeot Boxer?
They share the same Sevel platform and SCR hardware. The tank module, dosing injector and NOx sensors are the same parts. Software calibration differs slightly but fault diagnosis and repair procedures are identical.
How much does a Ducato AdBlue tank module cost to replace?
We quote a fixed price after diagnosis. The module cost varies by model year and supplier. The price includes the part, fitting and live-data verification. No hidden extras.
Should I drain and refill AdBlue before the first trip of the season?
If the fluid has been in the tank for more than six months, a drain and refill is a sensible precaution. Fresh ISO 22241 certified fluid avoids the most common seasonal fault trigger. It is a low-cost step compared to a tank module replacement.
What does P20BA mean on a Fiat Ducato?
P20BA is reductant heater performance. On the Ducato the heater sits inside the tank module and prevents AdBlue freezing. A failed element means the whole module is replaced. We confirm the fault with a current draw test before quoting the replacement.
