Peugeot Boxer AdBlue Repair
Peugeot Boxer AdBlue repair: tank module, P20E8 and countdown faults fixed on your drive
The Peugeot Boxer 2.0 and 2.2 BlueHDi use a tank-integrated AdBlue module containing the pump, heater and level sensor. When the module fails, the dash typically reads "Starting impossible in X miles" and begins counting down. P20E8 is the most common code we see. The Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato share the same platform and parts. We attend 6am–9pm, 7 days a week including bank holidays. From £249, fixed price before work starts, no fix no fee.

What the Boxer dash warning means
The Peugeot Boxer typically displays "Starting impossible in X miles" when the ECU logs an SCR fault. The countdown reduces with every mile driven. On some Boxer models the message is accompanied by a spanner icon and an amber engine warning light.
At zero the ECU prevents the engine from cranking on the next ignition-off event. The Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato share the same PSA platform and display similar messages — the wording may differ slightly between brands but the countdown logic is identical.
Common AdBlue faults on the Peugeot Boxer
The Boxer uses a PSA-designed tank module where the pump, heater and level sensor are combined in a single assembly. This integrated design is the source of most callouts.
Tank module pump failure — P20E8
The pump inside the tank module loses pressure over time. P20E8 (reductant pressure too low) is the most common AdBlue code on the Boxer. Because the pump is sealed inside the module, failure means the complete unit is replaced. We confirm with a live pressure test before quoting.
Tank module heater failure — P20BA, P20B9
The heating element prevents AdBlue freezing at −11 °C. When it fails, P20BA or P20B9 sets and the countdown starts. The heater is part of the sealed tank module. Cold-weather faults are most common but an open-circuit element can trigger codes in any season.
Dosing injector crystallisation — P20EE, P204F
Urea crystals build up around the injector nozzle, restricting dosing. P20EE (SCR efficiency below threshold) or P204F sets. On the Boxer the injector is in the exhaust between the DPF and catalyst. We clean or replace it on site.
NOx sensor failure — P2200, P229F
A degraded upstream or downstream NOx sensor sends incorrect readings. P2200 (NOx sensor circuit) or P229F (NOx sensor correlation) sets. The Boxer uses two sensors — one either side of the SCR catalyst. We test both under load before recommending a replacement.
Contaminated AdBlue — P207F
Incorrect fluid, water ingress or old degraded stock trips the quality sensor inside the tank module. P207F sets and the countdown activates. We drain the system, flush and refill with ISO 22241 certified fluid.
Live-data diagnosis on a Peugeot Boxer
We use PSA manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment. The Boxer's ECU provides detailed SCR measured values that let us isolate the fault precisely.
Full DTC read and freeze-frame analysis
Every code from the engine and SCR modules is read. Freeze-frame data captured at the moment of failure — exhaust temperature, pump pressure, dosing rate — tells us which component was active when the fault set.
Pump pressure test under command
The pump is commanded on and live pressure compared to the PSA specification. Low or unstable pressure confirms a failing tank module pump. Stable pressure shifts focus to the injector and sensor circuit.
NOx sensor readings at varying load
Both sensors are monitored in real time. A healthy catalyst shows the downstream reading dropping sharply when dosing is active. A flat trace with correct pressure points to sensor failure or catalyst deterioration.
Heater current draw test
The heater is commanded on and current draw measured at the connector. Open circuit or abnormally low draw confirms the heater element has failed.
Fluid quality and supply circuit inspection
Refractometer confirms 32.5 % urea concentration. Supply lines and connectors are inspected for leaks, corrosion or damage from road debris.
How the Boxer AdBlue repair works
The result is a Boxer that starts without restriction, drives with no warning and has verified SCR function. Fixed price before work starts. No fix, no fee. Written warranty.
Injector cleaning and fluid replacement are typically completed in a single visit. Tank module replacement requires the part to be ordered — we complete full diagnosis on the first visit, confirm the fixed price and return to fit.
Countdown cleared and engine restarting
After the repair all codes are cleared and the countdown confirmed gone. The engine is started and restarted to prove the lockout has released and the dash is clean.
SCR function confirmed through live data
Dosing pressure, both NOx sensors and heater status are monitored while the engine runs. Any reading outside specification is investigated before the vehicle is handed back.
Written warranty
Every Boxer repair carries a written warranty.
- Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Covers callout, diagnosis and repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid drain and refill, or wiring repair.
- NOx sensor replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Sensor cost depends on position — upstream or downstream. Quoted after diagnosis confirms the failed sensor.
- Tank module replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis The Boxer's integrated tank module contains pump, heater and sensors. This is the most common major repair on the Boxer. Quoted before the part is ordered.
- Multiple component repair: Fixed price after diagnosis Where more than one component has failed we quote the full scope before work begins.
Software path — discussed after physical diagnosis only
Repair is always offered first. Software modification is discussed only when the tank module or catalyst has failed and replacement cost is disproportionate, or when the owner requests it after understanding the options.
Countdown and dash warning are removed.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Boxer, Relay and Ducato — shared platform, shared faults
The Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato are built on the same PSA/Stellantis platform with the same 2.0 and 2.2 BlueHDi engines. The AdBlue tank module, injector and NOx sensors are identical across all three brands. Fault codes, diagnostic procedures and repair parts are interchangeable.
If your vehicle is a Relay or Ducato, the diagnosis and repair process described here applies equally. We have dedicated pages for the Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato with brand-specific detail, but the underlying SCR system is the same.
Tank module replacement — what is involved
The Boxer tank module sits inside the AdBlue tank on the nearside of the chassis. Replacing it involves draining the tank, removing the sender unit, fitting the new module and refilling with fresh certified fluid.
The job is done on site — no garage or ramp required. We carry the tooling and drainage equipment. After fitting, the system is primed, bled of air and tested with live data to confirm correct pump pressure and heater function before the vehicle is returned.
BlueHDi engine variants we cover
We service every Boxer fitted with the 2.0 BlueHDi (from 2016 onward) and the earlier 2.2 HDi with AdBlue. Output variants — 110 PS, 120 PS, 140 PS and 165 PS — all share the same SCR architecture and tank module design.
If you are unsure which engine your Boxer has, give us the registration when you call and we confirm immediately. Motorhome conversions based on the Boxer use the same drivetrain and are covered by the same diagnostic process.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Starting impossible" mean on a Peugeot Boxer?
It means the ECU has detected an SCR fault and is counting down the remaining miles before it prevents the engine from starting. At zero the engine will not crank. Call 0203 038 8555 and we resolve the fault on site.
How much to fix AdBlue on a Peugeot Boxer?
From £249 for diagnosis and straightforward repairs. Tank module or sensor replacement is quoted at a fixed price after diagnosis. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.
Is the Boxer AdBlue system the same as the Ducato?
Yes. The Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato share the same platform, engine and AdBlue components. Fault codes, parts and repair procedures are identical. We service all three.
What is P20E8 on a Peugeot Boxer?
P20E8 is reductant pressure too low. On the Boxer it typically points to the pump inside the integrated tank module. We test live pump pressure against the PSA specification to confirm before recommending the module replacement.
Can the AdBlue pump be replaced separately on a Boxer?
On most Boxer models the pump is sealed inside the tank module along with the heater and level sensor. A pump failure means the complete module is replaced. We always confirm with a live pressure test before quoting the unit.
Do you repair AdBlue faults on Boxer motorhomes?
Yes. Motorhome conversions based on the Boxer use the same 2.0 or 2.2 BlueHDi drivetrain and SCR system. The diagnostic process and repair parts are identical. We attend motorhomes on driveways, campsites and storage yards.
Can I drive my Boxer with the AdBlue warning on?
You can drive while the countdown is active but every mile reduces the remaining distance. At zero the engine will not restart after the next switch-off. If the counter is low, park somewhere the vehicle can be worked on and call 0203 038 8555.
