Fault code P20BA
P20BA: Reductant Heater Control Circuit Performance
P20BA flags when the ECU detects the AdBlue tank heater is drawing current outside specification — the circuit is not open, but performance has drifted. Common causes are a degraded heater element, corroded wiring or a relay fault. Sibling code P20B9 indicates a complete open circuit. We diagnose on your driveway with live heater-current testing. From £249, fixed price, no fix no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.

The part behind this code: AdBlue heater. Every other code: AdBlue fault codes.
What P20BA looks like from the driver's seat
The AdBlue warning lamp illuminates and a countdown in miles or restarts may appear. P20BA does not mean the heater has failed completely — the ECU measured current flow outside the expected window during a heater activation cycle. The engine runs normally but the countdown has started.
P20B9 — reductant heater control circuit open — is the sibling code. P20B9 sets when no current flows at all. The two codes sometimes appear together when a corroded connector causes intermittent contact. Other related codes include P20BB (circuit low) and P20BC (circuit high).
On cold mornings the ECU commands the heater before dosing begins. If the heater test fails the ECU may suspend dosing entirely, which triggers downstream efficiency codes like P20EE within a few drive cycles.
What causes P20BA
The heater circuit is exposed to road spray, thermal cycling and corrosive AdBlue vapour. These are the causes we find, in the order we find them.
Wiring and connector corrosion
The heater loom runs along the underbody and connects at or inside the AdBlue tank. Road salt and AdBlue vapour corrode pins and terminals. A high-resistance joint lets some current through but not enough to satisfy the ECU performance window. Ford Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue and VW Crafter 2.0 TDI are frequent offenders — the connector sits in the salt-spray path behind the rear axle.
Degraded heater element
The resistive element inside the tank degrades with thermal cycling. Resistance drifts upward, reducing current draw below specification. The heater still produces warmth but not enough to pass the ECU check. On Mercedes Sprinter OM651 and OM654 the heater is part of the tank sender unit and cannot be replaced separately.
Heater relay or fuse-box fault
A relay with increased internal resistance reduces supply voltage to the heater. Current draw drops below threshold even with a good element. We measure voltage at the heater connector first — a low reading points to the relay or fuse board rather than the heater itself.
Earth path degradation
The heater return path shares a chassis earth with other underbody components. Corrosion on the earth stud increases resistance and reduces measured current. Cleaning and re-torqueing the earth stud can resolve P20BA without replacing any parts. Common on Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay where the earth point sits near the rear subframe.
Tank unit failure (integrated heater)
On Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet the heater, sender and pump sit in one tank module. A heater failure means the whole unit is replaced. BMW B47 and B57 diesel models use a separate heating plate that can be swapped independently.
Live-data checks we run for P20BA
Heater faults are diagnosed electrically. We measure what the circuit is actually doing rather than guessing from the code alone.
Heater current draw under command
We command the heater on through the diagnostic tool and measure actual amperage with a clamp meter. The reading is compared against the manufacturer specification. Current below the lower threshold confirms a performance fault; zero current points to an open circuit — P20B9.
Supply voltage at the heater connector
Battery voltage is measured at the heater plug while the relay is commanded on. A drop greater than 0.5 V across the relay and loom indicates wiring or relay resistance rather than a heater element fault.
Heater element resistance
With the connector unplugged we measure resistance across the element. An in-range reading with low current draw points to a supply or wiring issue. An out-of-range reading confirms element degradation.
Earth path continuity
Resistance from the heater earth pin to the chassis earth stud is measured. Anything above 0.5 Ω is investigated. A corroded stud or broken wire in the return path reduces current and trips the performance threshold.
Freeze-frame analysis
The freeze-frame snapshot tells us ambient temperature and coolant temperature at the moment P20BA stored. A code that only logs in sub-zero conditions suggests a marginal element that passes in warm weather but fails when current demand is highest.
Repair path for P20BA
Once diagnosis confirms the failed component we quote a fixed price before any work starts. Many P20BA faults are resolved with wiring repair or a relay swap. Where the heater element has failed, the part is replaced on-site or ordered and fitted on a return visit. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
Wiring and connector repair
Corroded pins are cleaned, re-crimped or the connector is replaced. The loom is re-routed or protected where chafing caused the fault. Current draw is re-tested to confirm the repair holds under load.
Heater element or tank unit replacement
Where the element has failed we fit an OE-quality replacement. On integrated-tank platforms the whole unit is replaced. Heater current and dosing function are both verified after the swap.
Codes cleared and countdown reset
All stored and pending codes are cleared. The countdown resets once the ECU completes a successful heater activation cycle on the next cold start. We verify a clean dash before handing the vehicle back.
- Diagnosis and wiring repair: From £249 Covers callout, live-data diagnosis and repairs such as connector cleaning, relay swap or earth repair. Fixed price before we start.
- Heater element replacement: Fixed price after diagnosis Element cost varies by make and whether the heater is integrated into the tank unit. Quoted once diagnosis confirms the part.
- Tank sender unit (integrated heater): Fixed price after diagnosis Applies to Boxer, Relay, Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter where the heater cannot be replaced separately.
Software path — after diagnosis only
Physical repair is offered first. Software modification of the heater monitoring strategy is discussed only when replacement cost is disproportionate or the owner requests it after a full explanation.
The modification adjusts the ECU heater-activation strategy so the performance check no longer triggers a fault code or countdown.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
P20BA vs P20B9 — what is the difference?
P20BA is a performance code — the heater circuit has continuity but current draw is outside the ECU's expected range. P20B9 is an open-circuit code — no current is detected at all. A completely severed wire or a blown element sets P20B9. A corroded connector allowing partial current flow sets P20BA.
When both codes appear together the fault is usually intermittent. The connector makes and breaks contact depending on vibration or temperature. We see this on Ford Transit and Transit Custom where the loom runs close to the exhaust and heat cycling loosens terminal tension over time.
Cold weather and P20BA — why it surfaces in winter
AdBlue freezes at approximately −11 °C. The tank heater is designed to thaw the fluid before the engine needs to dose. In summer the heater rarely activates and a marginal element passes unnoticed. The first cold snap demands full output, the current draw falls short, and P20BA sets.
If you see P20BA only during winter and it clears in warm weather, the element is degrading but has not fully failed. Repairing the circuit now avoids a hard failure and a countdown next winter.
Which vehicles are most affected by P20BA
Ford Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue account for a large share of P20BA callouts. The heater connector sits behind the rear axle where road salt accumulates. Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter follow — both use tank-integrated heaters that degrade with age and cannot be replaced piecemeal.
Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato share the same PSA-Fiat platform and the same integrated tank module. A heater failure on any of these three is the same replacement procedure. BMW 3 Series and X3 with the B47 diesel use a bolt-on heater plate that is cheaper and quicker to swap.
Frequently asked questions
What does fault code P20BA mean?
P20BA means the ECU measured current through the AdBlue tank heater outside the expected range during an activation test. The circuit is not open — that would be P20B9 — but performance is below or above specification. Causes include corroded wiring, a degraded heater element or a relay fault.
Is P20BA the same as P20B9?
No. P20BA is a performance code — partial current flow but outside tolerance. P20B9 is an open-circuit code — no current detected at all. They sometimes appear together when a connector is making intermittent contact. Both point to the heater circuit but the repair approach differs.
Can I drive with P20BA?
The engine runs normally but a countdown may have started. Each mile or restart reduces the remaining allowance. At zero, most vehicles prevent engine restarts after switch-off. Get it diagnosed before the countdown reaches a critical level.
P20BA Ford Transit — what is the usual fix?
On Transit and Transit Custom the most common cause is connector corrosion behind the rear axle. We clean or replace the connector and re-test heater current draw. If the element has failed we replace the heater or tank unit. From £249, fixed price before work starts.
How much does a P20BA repair cost?
Diagnosis and straightforward wiring or relay repairs start from £249. If the heater element or integrated tank unit needs replacing, we quote a fixed price after diagnosis. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Call 0203 038 8555.
Does P20BA only appear in cold weather?
Often, yes. The heater works hardest in winter. A marginal element passes the ECU test in warm weather but fails when ambient temperature drops and current demand rises. Repairing it during summer prevents a countdown the following winter.
