Fault code P2BAD
P2BAD: NOx Exceedance — Root Cause Unknown
P2BAD means tailpipe NOx has exceeded the permitted threshold for a sustained period and the ECU cannot isolate a single root cause. It almost always appears alongside a companion code — P20EE, P229F, P20E8 or P2200 — that points to the actual fault. Treating P2BAD alone achieves nothing; the underlying dosing, sensor or catalyst problem must be diagnosed first. We test the full SCR chain on-site. From £249. Call 0203 038 8555.

The part behind this code: NOx sensor fault. Every other code: AdBlue fault codes.
What P2BAD looks like on the dash
The engine management light illuminates and an AdBlue countdown typically follows. P2BAD is a threshold code — the ECU has measured cumulative NOx levels above its permitted ceiling for longer than the calibration allows. It does not identify a specific component. Think of it as an alarm, not a diagnosis.
On most platforms P2BAD stores only after one or more underlying fault codes have already been present for several drive cycles. The ECU tried to manage the situation — adjusting dosing, re-running monitors — and failed. The companion code that was already present is usually the real starting point for diagnosis.
Related codes that commonly appear alongside P2BAD include P20EE (catalyst efficiency below threshold), P229F (NOx sensor correlation), P20E8 (dosing pressure too low), P2200 (upstream NOx sensor circuit) and P204F (reductant system performance). Clearing P2BAD without fixing the companion code results in the exceedance code returning within a few hundred miles.
What causes P2BAD
P2BAD is always a consequence of something else. The root cause is whatever is allowing NOx to exceed the threshold. These are the underlying faults we find, most common first.
Dosing shortfall — blocked injector or weak pump
A crystallised AdBlue injector or a pump that cannot build target pressure means too little reductant reaches the catalyst. Conversion drops and tailpipe NOx climbs. Ford Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue and PSA BlueHDi platforms (Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay, Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet) are the vehicles we see most often with dosing-related P2BAD.
Downstream NOx sensor drift
A degraded downstream sensor over-reports NOx. The ECU believes exceedance is occurring even if conversion is adequate. P229F often accompanies P2BAD in this scenario. Mercedes Sprinter OM651 and OM654 are frequent — the downstream sensor sits in a high-heat, high-vibration position behind the DPF.
Upstream NOx sensor fault
A failed or drifted upstream sensor sends incorrect engine-out NOx data to the ECU. The dosing calculation is based on this reading; if it is too low the ECU under-doses and real NOx rises. P2200 or a general circuit code usually stores alongside P2BAD.
SCR catalyst deterioration
A catalyst with a worn washcoat cannot convert NOx regardless of how much AdBlue is injected. The downstream reading stays high and the exceedance counter runs. Live-data comparison under steady load confirms the catalyst rather than the dosing system.
Contaminated or degraded AdBlue fluid
Diluted fluid, water contamination or degraded urea solution reduces conversion efficiency. The quality sensor may or may not flag a separate code (P207F). A refractometer test confirms concentration. Draining and replacing the fluid can resolve P2BAD without touching a component.
Wiring or CAN fault masking a sensor
A corroded connector or a broken CAN wire to a NOx sensor module prevents the ECU from receiving accurate data. Dosing runs open-loop or is suspended, NOx exceeds the threshold, and P2BAD stores alongside U029D or P2200. The wiring fault is the root cause.
How we diagnose P2BAD
P2BAD alone tells us very little. Diagnosis means testing the entire SCR chain to find which component let NOx exceed the limit.
Companion code review
We read every stored, pending and permanent code. The companion code — P20EE, P229F, P20E8, P2200, U029D or P207F — directs the diagnosis. If P2BAD is the only code stored, we run the full check sequence below.
Upstream and downstream NOx comparison
Both sensor readings in ppm are graphed under load. A large gap between upstream and downstream confirms the catalyst is converting. A small gap points to a dosing shortfall or catalyst issue. An erratic or stuck downstream reading points to the sensor.
Dosing pressure and injector flow
Pump pressure is compared to the ECU target while the injector is commanded open. Low pressure or zero flow confirms a dosing fault. We check for crystal build-up at the injector bung at the same time.
AdBlue fluid quality — refractometer
A refractometer checks urea concentration against the 32.5% specification. The quality sensor reading is compared. A mismatch or a low concentration reading identifies contamination or degradation as the root cause.
Sensor signal integrity and CAN health
Each NOx sensor signal is checked for noise, dropouts and response time. CAN termination resistance is measured to confirm the data link is healthy. A communication fault that prevents accurate data can drive the exceedance counter without any mechanical failure.
Freeze-frame and exceedance counter
The freeze-frame snapshot captured when P2BAD stored tells us engine load, exhaust temperature, dosing rate and sensor readings at the moment of exceedance. The internal exceedance counter — where accessible — shows how far above the threshold the system was and for how long.
Repair path for P2BAD
P2BAD is resolved by fixing the companion fault. Once the root cause is repaired and the SCR system is operating within specification, the exceedance counter resets and P2BAD clears. Fixed price before work starts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.
Root-cause component repaired or replaced
The failed component identified during diagnosis — injector, pump, sensor, wiring or fluid — is repaired or replaced. P2BAD is not addressed directly; it resolves as a consequence of fixing the underlying fault.
SCR system verified under load
After repair, the engine is run and both NOx sensors, dosing pressure and catalyst efficiency are monitored in real time. The exceedance counter must not increment. If any value drifts, the repair is extended before the vehicle is released.
All codes cleared and countdown reset
Every stored and pending code is cleared. The countdown resets once the ECU confirms the system is operating within limits. We verify a clean dash and confirm the vehicle restarts cleanly.

Software path — considered only after full diagnosis
Physical repair is offered first. Software modification of the SCR monitoring strategy is discussed only when the underlying fault cannot be resolved economically, or when the owner requests it after a full explanation.
The modification adjusts the ECU calibration so the NOx exceedance threshold no longer triggers P2BAD or a countdown. This path is relevant only when a catalyst has deteriorated and replacement cost is disproportionate.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
P2BAD is a symptom, not a diagnosis
Clearing P2BAD without repairing the companion fault is the single biggest reason the code returns. The exceedance counter resets when codes are cleared, but as soon as the SCR system runs a monitor and finds the same shortfall, the counter climbs again and P2BAD re-stores.
Any repair approach that targets only P2BAD — clearing codes, resetting adaptations, replacing a sensor on a guess — is treating the symptom. The root cause must be identified through live-data testing of the full chain: dosing pressure, injector flow, both NOx sensors and catalyst efficiency.
Companion codes — what to look for alongside P2BAD
P20EE (catalyst efficiency below threshold) is the most common companion. It usually points to a dosing shortfall or a tired catalyst. P229F (NOx sensor correlation) suggests either the downstream sensor has drifted or the catalyst is under-performing under load.
P20E8 (dosing pressure too low) and P204F (reductant system performance) point directly at the pump or injector. P2200 (upstream sensor circuit) and U029D (lost communication) indicate a sensor or wiring fault that disrupted the dosing calculation. When P2BAD stores with no companion, the fault may be intermittent — freeze-frame data and a monitored road test are needed to reproduce it.
Fleet vehicles and recurring P2BAD
Fleet Transits, Sprinters and Crafters that run high mileage in stop-start urban conditions are the most likely to see recurring P2BAD. Short journeys prevent the SCR catalyst from reaching optimal temperature, and dosing is interrupted repeatedly. Over time the catalyst and injector degrade faster than on motorway-biased vehicles.
For fleets we offer a diagnostic check that covers the entire SCR system in one visit. We identify marginal components before they fail hard, quote the preventive repair, and schedule the work at a time that suits the operator. One planned visit is cheaper than a roadside breakdown and a lost day of revenue.
Frequently asked questions
What does P2BAD mean?
P2BAD means tailpipe NOx has exceeded the ECU's permitted threshold for a sustained period. It is a consequence code — the root cause is a separate fault in the dosing system, a NOx sensor, the catalyst or the fluid. P2BAD almost always appears alongside a companion code that identifies the actual problem.
P2BAD cost to fix UK
Diagnosis and straightforward repairs start from £249. The total depends on which component has failed — a wiring fix costs less than a sensor or pump replacement. We quote a fixed price after diagnosis. No fix, no fee. Call 0203 038 8555.
Can I drive with P2BAD?
The engine runs normally but an AdBlue countdown is very likely active. At zero restarts most vehicles lock the engine after switch-off. Get it diagnosed before the countdown reaches a critical level to avoid being stranded.
P2BAD with no other codes — what does that mean?
It is uncommon but it happens. The companion code may have been cleared previously, or the underlying fault is intermittent. Freeze-frame data and a monitored road test under load are needed to reproduce the exceedance and identify the failing component.
P2BAD on a Ford Transit — what is the usual cause?
On Transit and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue the most common root cause behind P2BAD is a crystallised dosing injector reducing AdBlue delivery. The catalyst receives too little reductant, NOx climbs and P2BAD stores alongside P20EE or P204F. We clean or replace the injector on-site.
Will clearing P2BAD fix the problem?
No. Clearing the code resets the exceedance counter temporarily, but the monitor re-runs within a few drive cycles. If the underlying dosing, sensor or catalyst fault is still present, P2BAD returns. The root cause must be diagnosed and repaired.
P2BAD and P20EE together — what should I do?
P20EE points to poor catalyst efficiency and is usually the root-cause code. P2BAD is the consequence. Get both diagnosed together — the fix for P20EE typically resolves P2BAD as well. Call 0203 038 8555 for a fixed-price diagnosis from £249.
